If you want to run an amp w/o opening the radio, get a 4 pill amp with 2SC2879's inside. And use a stock 4 watt radio to drive it. It'll not overdrive the pills and the amp will last a long time and probably sound clean too.

At least he didn't tell you that you need to Clip the limiter, Peak & Tune, and add a Power mic. So you can run an amp.

Well, he did get me with a "Peak & Tune", which I think was more like a "Peek & Tune". ;)

That sounds like a lot to remember! ;)

How would I know what's inside the amp?

Are these features that are usually listed on the specs/features of an amp?

As you can see, I know next to nothing about this stuff!

Thanks to everyone for trying to educate me!

Not so much unethical as simply not knowing what they're doing. Clip this, turn that, solder a couple parts in. They don't know what they're doing; they're just following the steps they found online or in a book. No idea what the effect of a 10:1 "swing" has on the signal. The unethical ones are the ones that *know* what they're doing, and screw up a stock radio for a few bucks.

    handlebar Thanks this.

I would agree but I found out that even if they don't know what they are doing, it is the lack of willingness to learn from the right sources that makes them unethical when they do this for a buck or two. I ran into a bunch of these guys on the road at different truck stops and wonder where in the heck did they learn their skills, like soldering.

A Texas Star 500 watt would take your stock 4 watt Cobra and work good. (if you can find one)

Do they have to have a heavy wire connection straight to the battery?

Yes. I've always went straight to the battery with the power wires. And put a fuse in it too. I'd probably want 8 gauge wire for a 500. I used 6 gauge wire when I ran the TS 667V. Got it from a local boat manufacture. It was the wire they used to power their trolling motors. I'm running 10 gauge with my KL 300 and have had no problems.
