I too am waiting to hear why shifting by ear, eye or feel would tear anything up. Makes no sense to me so long as your ears, eyes and ### are correct.

I've heard they shift in an opposite way that ours. 1 is right and up.

That at old timer told you right. I meet quite a few drivers that have ran lease trucks before and they want to get their own truck. I tell them that they want a minimum 500 HP and a 13. Minimum. Thank that old hand for his advice, thank yourself for listening and shopping around and waiting until you find a truck to your specs instead of buying the first thing on a lot.

BTW, lose the curiosity. Quite a few here comment on things they know absolutely nothing about.

another area i enjoyed a 18 speed was when i was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic crawling along it gave me more options to keep rpm low and let torque pull my 100,000 lbs along . but i agree 13 is enough and 10 speeds would do quite well on modern high torque engines if 9/10 split was a closer ratio.. a 10 speed with gear down protection forces driver to stay in high gear longer which i suspect is why most companies go that route.

I had an automatic rental. Boy that was horrible. I wouldn't advise some one to get an automatic.

Years ago I drove a 14 speed. Made by spicer. model sst114. biggest piece of crap tranny there ever was.
To much gear clash on the air shift. I thought I was shifting it wrong. Shop said nope, when it gets quite then worry as it's getting ready to shell. Honest their words. Also if you hit the throttle hard after the shift it would tear out the rear seal, where the yoke went into the tranny.

Yea i dont sit there watching tach or speedo. My eyes are focused in front of me. Ive had no problems driving that way, i dont use clutch either i float them in. Works prefect for me, I up shift and down shift fine.
So 18s are really no different that the 10s i drive, other than more gearing options.

As far as tearing trannys up, i have no clue who has ever done that. I dont grind gears, now when i started learning to drive id grind that truck like crazy. Took time but i got it..
