I have been reading on the forums for over a month now, pretty much daily, And I finally decided to make a account to introduce myself.
I'm currently awaiting to start my cdl training at a local school CDC or Career development center may 27th is first day of class, I have already paid and done oreintation. Due to my current job I was unable to be approved for any types of grants, me and my wife both work. But with that I have always wanted to be a driver.
I came to the conclusion to do this finally because financially I was able to pay for the class, so really have nothing to lose... other than 4k lol. My wifes dad operates a small fleet out of Ohio also, and does pretty good so also hope in the future with guidance from him some day I can be half as successful as him.
But as always to get something going like that you need experience or no insurance will touch you. That's what I love about the internet and these forums. I applied to basically all the good carriers you read about hear that take students. TMC, Boyd bros, rohel, etc etc. I have two speeding tickets on my record, so that made it tuff. But luckily rohel gave me a prehire offer letter and all that and I'm very thankful because TMC was number 1 on my list and Rohel was 2nd.
With that I head out to start orientation and training with them June 16.
I'm pretty sure I have everything I need for right now. To take with me including a atlas, I would like a nice GPS to go with it but the ones I have looked at have been around 300-400 $ don't know of that's the average or not, that was at my local truck stop I got a cb that I already have in my truck, but not going to take.it with me at first to try and keep my load light on my trainer lol.
But anyways good luck out there guys and hope I can make this a success! It would be a improvement on my current job , I work 64 hours a week and only make about 31k a year gross. I live in the sticks in KY... lol

hello fellow briarhopper ... I'll be right behind you going to school in July but doing the community college thing instead. Roehl is on my radar however, and I'd be interested in your experiences with them once you get settled in.
P.S. I know some Napiers in Clay County... is that where you're at?Chinatown Thanks this. -
Frankfort is a good hiring area for many good companies:
Trimac Transportation : hires new CDL grads even though the website says "experience required." Hazmat/tanker jobs pay $55K-$65K per year.
JBS Carriers
Super Service
US Express - only good for teams
Melton Truck Lines
Superior Carriers
Tidewater Transit
Watkins-Shepard
TMC
Schneider Bulk - tanker divisionbriarhopper Thanks this. -
Chinatown I'm going to listen to the voice of experience (yours) and try for tankers right out of the gate. I have your tanker list (for the ones that hire newbies) memorized by now lol and once I get settled into school I plan on applying to them all and see what shakes out. Just a gut feeling but for some reason I think my best shot is with Schneider bulk - I guess because I talked to one of their recruiters in person at the Mid-America Truck Show back in March, and once on the phone when he called me for a follow-up.
If nothing pans out with tanks, then I have a "B" list of dry van carriers I'll work my way through, some of which are on the list you provided (i.e. Super Service and Watkins-Shephard). I've also done research on H.O. Wolding and RBX (I don't know what that stands for), and Roehl - if for no other reason than I see a lot of their trucks rolling through KY, although the trucks I see are mostly flatbedders, which I'm not interested in, sooo....can't really tell you why on Roehl.
Thanks again Chinatown for helping new drivers find a good company to start out with. Your commitment to this does not go unnoticed. Best to you and yours.Chinatown Thanks this.
