Wish we had some better runs but I knew that going to a end of line terminal. But I like living on the island

Waiting to see what happens with this new LHD (Line Haul Driver) position is going to do. It has me in fear of losing my position or cutting runs down... I've thought about switching to city, but then I remember all the back breaking work. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens

Well most of you know me, I have worked at CWF (not gonna mention that experience). Then I was at YRC for almost 2 years. My first year I was in the city, till I was on layoff for a 2nd time with no answer of a return. This way I was able to transfer to another terminal to do line-haul which I ended up really liking. Now that terminal was very far and commuting it was a pain, was 60 miles from my moms (130 from dads). i ended up gettin an apt closeby, where I was able to save money on fuel. ad not rushing to get there. I ended up being able to hold a bid which is normally unheard of, my last month there I was on a 8pm time start mon-fri.

Well after a while I thought i would like living further up north, i was getting tired of driving home every weekend, and some of my hobbies I do were put on hold as I never had time to do any of it. Also with some personal issues is was best for me to go closer to home anyways to get read for the worst. I started looking for jobs closer to home, like a line-haul gig, didnt want to do P/D anymore unless it was stuff like heavy equipment delivery or big construction stuff. With the economy the way it is it was hard, and knowing I am unhappy with P/D like our smaller terminals. WHy not transfer with YRC? the two smaller terminals by my dads where I wanted to move back to is about a 20+ year wait for the road as they only have 2 each.

With all this being said I found a road position for UPSF, terminals 10 minutes away from my dads. I applied on the website and pretty much as soon as I submitted the application in, the website asked me to schedule an interview, so I did the best day for me which was a friday. I made it to the interview, the TM right away started explaining the job, I told him I was currently on the road for YRC, and looking to relocate back to this area. Right away he wanted me to come back that monday for drug/dot and road test. BUt as I wouldve been 130 miles away, he gave me all the papers that second and had a guy give me a road test, which was fairly easy. Got all my stuff in and the next friday I finished up some paperwork and W-2 forms.

Now at this point I just got my time start at YRC. Over the weeks the TM was calling for this or that, and after a few weeks he called me on a monday saying ok are you still interested to which I said yes, so he then said ok when would like to start? I wanted to give YRC two weeks and to do the right thing, they were extremely good to me (at least at the terminal I transfered too) For the next wek YRC was trying to make ways for me to stay. guess it shows that I was good there. A lot of dispatchers were bummed out as well, I was one of the few who didnt like messing around all day, i wanted to be done and go home.

So last monday I go in at 8am for like an Orientation, to watch some amazingly exciting VHS tapes, a lot from Overnite as well. Sat there for 8 hours watch them, had a lunch break which was nice. Then the TM said ordered my uniform and told me that I cant really go out on the road without a uniform but to come in and work the dock a little to help refreshen my skills, and learn their ways of doing it. Of course the next day I wake up to a call they had some problems on my application and had to retake a drug test. Ok I got nothing to hide so where do I go. Do all that, then finally yesterday and almost phone calls everyday he calls me saying ok come on in tonight.

Go in, the outbound supervisor remembered me, here and another lady working got me my uniform, then helped out what to do. Now the TM said my time start is 7pm to help with outbound before my run, since my run is normally short. She gave me to offer to whether I want to just come in at 9 for my run or if I want to keep the 7pm, figured Ill save the 9pm for warmer months when I can do stuff outside. Anyways they were really cool, got on forklift to mess around to relearn the controls, they are different then previous ones I have driven, one control works everything.

After messing around a bit few guys had me help them out with loading up some trailers until the safety guy came out to finish training. then I went was told i will be going out with the line haul driver trainer for the night on the longest run. He drove through NY, NYC and NJ and when we got to PA we swapped. Those new volvos handle real nice. they do 68mph, smooth ride, and these trucks had some power, the volvos I used to drive were dogs.

Got to the terminal, showed me what to do, where to park etc. Then got back intot he truck and I drove back to the NJ line, made some good timing getting home as well. Tonight I go in to work the dock a few hours then go with another guy who also does my run to learn everything there, then monday I start by mself

Management at my terminal seems fairly easy and cool, pretty much the other guys said just do what your supposed too and they dont bother you which is normally what i try to do.
