I talked to a recruiter back in April about the pay. I'm looking at Bulk, so I don't know if it's different for the dry van side of the house, but here's what he told me:

    1. $80/day during the training period (18 days or a little longer if you're going to be pulling tanks)
    2. .36cpm after being assigned solo, .40cpm after six months. Miles are based on "directed miles," which I understood as HHG or "zip code to zip code" miles.

The other stuff I was going to ask about but the recruiter was pressed for time, so maybe a Schneider driver will jump in after a bit and verify the pay info and also be able to tell you about APUs and what trucks they run. Hope this helps.

No apus, as far as pay goes depends on your region. Western states starting pay for van is either .26 or .27 per diem pay (after 90 days you can opt out for an additional 2 cents) with approximately a 4 cent raise after 6 months and another 3 cents after a year. This is a rough yet fairly accurate estimate. Don't think they offer bulk in the Bay Area but that may have changed

    .27 x 2000 mi/week = $540.

    $540 / 70 hrs/week = $7.71 per hour.

What other career field would people find this acceptable?

I have a handout from Schneider recruiter I seen in my class in May. Van truckload, New driver $0.31/mile. Guaranteed increases 3 months $0.33/mile, 6 months $0.36/mile, and 12 months $0.38/mile. This is from a Green Bay recruiter

theres aways a positive side or solution to everything though.
    1. if you only run 2k miles a week and you are new, this probablly isnt the line of work for you or talk to your dbl
    2. if you are only averaging 540$ a week, either stick it out because everyone gotta start somewhere or maybe lower your debt. 540$ a week is a lot to someone who has made good ffinancial decisions and sees more of it in their pocket.
    3. a lot of drivers work for places like schneider to get the safe record anndd experience to go be a driver for places like walmart. then all that has paid off.

This is true, at least for VTL Green Bay. Mandatory per diem for 90 days, so subtract 2 cents per mile. They will explain per diem, and you should consult your tax professional on the advisability of remaining on it. It works for some, not for others.

Also, the 90 day, 6 month & 1 year increases are effective the first of the month AFTER the respective anniversary, so if your hire date is early in the month, it's effectively 120 days, 7 & 13 months.
