Nighttime, you'll want to cross at the GWB and take the Deegan, as mentioned by EZX1100. From Rochester, take the Thruway to 81 South, to 380, to 80 East to 95 North which will get you over the GWB and to the Major Deegan. Then follow EZX1100's routing.

As a side note, and with regard to low clearance signage: Yellow low clearance signs are 1 foot less than what will actually clear. If the sign says 12'6", you'll clear with 13'6". WHITE signs are usually the ACTUAL clearance. If it says 12'6" on a WHITE sign, you should believe it. There are some exceptions with the white signage, but not many. And always run the center lane on the expressways when going under bridges, if you can.

signs in nyc and even ny state are tricky

on the big roads, dont worry about them

on the streets, be careful, they may actually be true (and sometimes not)

but one thing for sure, DO NOT GO ONTO ANY ROAD CALLED pkwy PKWY those are solely for cars

Belt parkway, cross island pkwy, hutchinson parkwary, saw mill river.....

however there are streets called parkway which are different, especially in brooklyn, eastern parkway, NO

I was just in brooklyn friday and paid that Verrazono bridge toll ($80) and sat in traffic for two hours (this was at 1300hrs)

you can make money doing NYC but it comes at a cost

you can. once you get over the rfk bridge from randall's island make sure you stay in the right lane and get off where the sign says 31st st astoria blvd, alternate to 278. turn right onto 29th, go 1 block and turn left to run astoria blvd as a service road back to the BQE. this is making you bypass the grand central parkway entrance and a 12'6 overpass. physically you can make it under with no problem but every once in a while (usually day time) they like to sit there and write tickets.

on your way look for the window front for the byzantine woodworking company

then get off at exit 31 for williamsburg, turn right on flushing and then right again on clinton which is the entrance to the navy yard.

it's closer, he doesn't have to deal with most of the cross bronx to get to the whitestone, or in other words he doesn't have to go east just to go west again, and most importantly of all he's not coming from rhode island, he coming from ROCHESTER, NY ;)
