A little info on me. for the past 3 years I've hauled trash transfer station to landfill, pulling their open top trailers. I have been under my own DOT# (intrastate NC) and insurance. Now I'm jumping out there all the way and need to buy a trailer. I am looking for a 53 foot dry van. Is any manufacturer better than the other, do I need e-track, my own blocking and bracing materials, swing door or roll up? If I missed anything that you guys have or find helpful it would be appreciated. Also is there any need to get a company to do my authority or should I take care of it myself and save a couple bucks?

    Thanks

I recommend OOIDA to almost everyone. They can help you get your authority. And the bucks you save by doing it yourself are usually off set by the money you loose by waiting around waiting.

As to what type of trailer to get, they all seem to be similar. I bought two new Vanguards. Great Dane's hold their resale value better but if you are buying used, you don't want one that has retained a high resale value. Swing doors are preferred as you can load them higher.

I am sure others with more experience will give you better input. But since they had not I figure my advice is worth the price you pay for it.

I like Utility trailers the most. I heard Great Danes are heavy.

Also look for Air Ride supposedly it is smoother than the Spring ride type.

    Not supposedly.. They are smoother.

I just picked up a brand new Utility 4000d-x. I did some digging around and and they were one of the best optioned out for the price.

Great Dane was about $7k more with less logistics posts.

I don't get the deal with Great Danes ... structurally and mechanically they may be stronger, but they have a couple of design flaws that make them a pain.

Not sure what you mean "mechanically"

My Utility uses the same Hendrickson tandem as the great Danes :D

Both Great Danes and Utilities are built well and I'd take either one over anything else. The Great Danes I used to pull at another company were a tad heavier. That wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. People say Great Dane has the best parts network and will get you anything you need quickly whereas all the other manufacturers fail miserably with the lack of a good parts network. Of course I have to admit the only part I ever needed for my current Utility was a new roof bow, which they had in stock, and I can't really think of why I'd need anything so unusual that it was a simple routine part not already stocked on the shelf - like roof bows, hinges, etc.
