to be honest. i don't know why people sitll buy the hand units.

cars come with gps. semi's come with gps.

you can install a number of programs on your phone or tablet. some are free. some come with a 1 time fee for platform purchased for.

it won't be long before the hand unit is basically obsolete. tom tom is available for android. all others would be smart to do the same.

My semi which is a 2014 prostate does not come with GPS. Heck we still have a big bulky quallcomm with an actual button keyboard. Company GPS routing I will not follow anyway since it is the slowest, no toll road way. I got to go the fastest way possible to make sure my dedicated. Run is ontime.

Few of our drivers use the Rand McNally TND 720 LM unit, they really like them.

I recently purchased a Rand McNally and I have to say, IT SUX! For some reason it won't accept about half the addresses I try to put into it. Says, invalid address or it wont even let me type in the address. They have a "predictive" input screen where it tries to guess what you're typing in and removes the characters it thinks you don't need. Very frustrating. The setup sux too. Fastest route, shortest route etc.... neither one means what it says. I'm going with a Garmin in about another month. I've had success with them before.

The onboard NAVIGATION on the Qualcomm will get you where you're going but you have to be very careful with it. It will take you places you don't want to be with a big truck and it says things like, "continue straight" when it really means turn hard left or right. Be careful with the Qualcomm NAV and avoid the REROUTE button at all costs. That's a sure fire way of having to call the cops to help you turn around! I'm just sayin....

The problem with using a trucker's GPS is, out of route miles, especially when dealing with a fuel stop in the middle of a run. The GPS may suggest an easier, faster route but it may exceed Schneider's acceptable out of route miles and in most cases won't pass anywhere near your prescribed fuel stop. I keep both running all the time and pick which one to follow in accordance with the previous parameters I mentioned.

There is a support thread if you are having issues with the TND. As stated many many many times, the GPS maps will never be perfect.

The GPS only thinks in terms of what are your parameters and what route is truck legal to get you there. There are many factors (see prior posts in this thread) that will determine what the attributes are for the roads.

If you are having issues with address's then by all means jump over to the support thread and let me know the address's.

We can complain all day long about the address's, routing, missing roads, missing restrictions, restrictions that show up, but are not there, etc etc, but until the GPS manufacture knows the details, it may not get corrected. I do have direct access to the RM GIS Department and any issue posted on the TND support thread I try to verify on my TND (which I have the next set of maps), and if it is in error then the RM GIS dept will get the issue. IF it is a HERE issue, then RM does submit those to HERE for correction. BUT, be aware this takes time to correct in the maps.

I wasn't trying to get anything corrected, I was just sharing my opinion. The Rand mcnally GPS "TELL RAND" function of the "dock" on the computer says they're overwhelmed with responses and can't respond. I took that to mean they don't care. That's fine with me, I'll just use and recommend other GPS manufacturers. Again, it's just my opinion. I respect yours, You should respect mine. I'm just sayin...
