Excessive oil consumption DDEC IV

Try to not put a gallon of oil in, and see what the dipstick reads the next day. Internal issues, you'd usually see blue smoke. More than likely, I would guess turbo. But, I'm no mechanic.

 

Clogged air filter will make em use oil too.

Could be turbo, especially if it is the stock waste gated type. I ditched the waste gate turbo before the factory rebuilt DDEC IV 60 got put into my truck. Put on a Borg Warner 171702 non waste gated variety. I have seen the waste gate ones slobber something fierce at times.

 

I'm no mechanic but these are some things I have learned along the way.

1. Don't put the gallon of oil in it and run it. I had the same problem, with oil consumption, and I was told by a guy to not put it in and run it an see what it does. Didn't put the gallon in and never went any lower. Apparently some motors don't want that gallon of oil, and burn it off and that's it.

2. Did the motor come with a ECM. I was told by a dealer that all the tunes for the Detroit's were different due to build specs. If you are using your old ECM on a different motor it could cause problems. Maybe your old motor had larger injectors, or different parameters in it causing the smoke.

3. Check the pipe between turbo and air charge, see if its full of oil. Bad seals in the turbo would cause it to blow oil out the front side to the air charge cooler.

4. Try and pay attention to the color of smoke. Its hard from driver seat, but I have been told, Black is excessive fuel, Blueish black/gray is oil, gray/white is coolant.

5. Go to reputable shop and have them run a oil sample on it. It can tell you any problems that are going on with the motor.

But I am not a mechanic and these are only opinions, I could be completely wrong

 

smoke heavier when climbing hills. oil being sucked in through the valves.

smoke heaver when going down hills. oil being sucked through piston rings.

you say blow by is not bad. how bad is not bad. blowby is a sign of worn piston rings.

 

That would be my guess if blue smoke on deceleration. Rings.
