It's all about each individual's situation. In my case I got my CDL 7 years ago and did a year over the road. Then got a local job utilizing my degree, AKA my CDL (because it certainly is the equivalent) to raise the kids and be home. Our last child joins the US Marines later this month and guess where my wife and I are going? Yep, OTR. Nothing to keep us home, and plenty of money to make (and save) over the next 15 years or so. It may not work for everyone but it fits our situation perfectly.

There was a documented cut in production with the new 34 and 1 to 5 thing and the carriers do need drivers ...before and after the regs changed.....some of it from attrition and some of it to cover new business. It's a fact very few young people look at the industry as a future...why would you?? Tight regs, driver cams and condescending carrier attitudes is part of it along with stagnant salaries....you really better love it cause you won't make any money at it.

I did ok because I got pvt. fleet as a young man, did my time and retired out. I will say that I purposely steered all 3 of my boys away from the job too..... it's not fun anymore. The stereo typing, the small wait shacks, the long hours waiting and getting told you don't get that or paid for that because your a driver....because your a driver...why would you???

Personally, I have a job waiting for me in the Permian, but my friend's company doesn't hire anybody w/out 1 year of experience b'cuz of insurance (I'm doing that now). So admittedly, I'm a little bit of a different situation than most new OTR drivers.

The cut in production doesn't address supply side issues; it's a balance. If supply stays low and demand stays steady, prices increase (because of scarcity). When prices (ergo profits) increase, then production catches back up (and by proxy the need for distribution)...

wyldhorses hit the nail on the head... If i'm not home with my wife and kids in my own bed, I want to be paid. So if I'm out the average 3 weeks then home a couple days, that's about 500 hours a month. 6000 hours a year. Take that 45k per year and divide it by the 6000 hours worked means I'd make $7.50 an hour driving truck. Worse yet, no overtime. I don't know how the industry gets away with it. Ok, I'll be more liberal with the numbers and only count the 14 hours a day DOT allows and use that for hours worked. That comes out to 12.17 an hour. McDonalds in some areas pays hamburger flippers 10. As to the not wanting to be in a cubicle being watched by an obnoxious boss... I can understand that. But I make $15.85 an hour as an equipment operator and dump truck driver. No one watches over my shoulder, my office is the great outdoors and I'm home by 3:30pm in time to pick up the kids from school. I bar-b-que every weekend and go to bed with my wife. I'm not trying to disrespect anyone, I just don't for the life of me understand why someone would take sub-standard pay and live in a truck so someone else can make a fortune. I get the lifestyle thing for the single guys, why not I guess. But sheez... truckers have the power if they unite. This country would be back in the dark ages in 2 weeks if trucks didn't roll and yet they get abused more than any industry I can think of...
