Yes, but if you have no proof. Family, friends, or motel receipt they can cite you for falsefiying logs. You just lucky nobody has caught it yet.
Can DOT officers bother you at a truck stop?

IF a driver is claiming they slept in a hotel, then, yes, they are supposed to have a receipt for it (I am on my phone, so I am not going to cite the reg., but it is in there under documentation required with daily logs). Other than that, there are no regulations requiring proof of where a driver may have spent their off-duty time, such as having someone "vouch" for the driver's presence. If asked, tell them you stayed with Nuna... as in Nuna Business.
Just do it with a smile. -
All I can say is good luck with that one, I for one wouldn't do it that way I would just log it, but to each his/her own. Too many situations can happen for example, you state you are off duty on your logs, and in reality you are in the sleeper, a supertrucker comes along and backs next to you and takes your hood off, now you have witnesses saying you got out of truck. Other driver clearly at fault but again you opening a can of worms that one may not really want to open.
with everyone being so litigious it's better to have the proof and be safe vs being found at fault -
Who said anything about logging off-duty when a driver is actually in their sleeper? Not me; that's log falsification. I'm simply pointing out that you're incorrect in stating that a driver is required to prove where they spent their off-duty time if not at a hotel. I have several places that I frequent where I stay with friends or family and it's nobody's #### business but mine.
-
again that's my point if asked you can at least prove you stayed somewhere other than your truck. If one would need a hotel receipt then one would also need some sort of other proof. Friends and family provide that proof whether it be needed or not just like a hotel receipt. All I am saying is always cover your butt no matter what the situation is.

Incorrect.

now you speaking in double tongues, you cannot not be right and wrong at the same time. Please re-read your own quote, and step away from the pipe.....
-
You're the one that needs to step away from the pipe, or take a reading comprehension course ... I have not posted anything contradictory.
-
Ok and I hadn't posted anything contradictory, either, but you the one saying incorrect not me, and if I had been agreeing with you and you been agreeing also how do you feel that what is said is incorrect.
Which means an you been agreeing and not agreeing with that one comment.
and I really was commenting about this guy who stated the below part. Which is something I wouldn't condone or approve of without at least some sort of proof whether needed or not. Again it's cya out here as nobody else is going to cya for you.

You have stated that if a driver chooses to stay in a hotel (thus logging off-duty) they are required to provide a receipt for same, which is correct. You also stated that if they choose to stay somewhere other than a hotel, such as with family or friends (also logged off-duty) , they will need to have someone vouch for them as some sort of "proof" akin to a hotel receipt, which is wrong.
