Day 8
Today was all about night driving, and driving in the city. We took a path through Cartersville, Emerson, Woodstock, Marietta, back to Woodstock, back through Marietta, through Kennesaw and Acworth, and then back to Cartersville.
This day was a ###### one for me. I did a lot more poorly than I thought I would. I don't know why this shifting just doesn't come more naturally for me. I can do the driving itself pretty well, but getting the shifts timed right and downshifting faster are a huge problem for me.
Tomorrow is the last day of the driving portion of class. If I can't show a lot of improvement, then I will likely be the next student to be sent home. -
Hang in there finalsomnia you'll get it.

Stick with it and keep a can-do attitude. Out of all these school threads there is a common theme. It seems even very good drivers struggle and doubt themselves at some point. They all seem to question their decision too. But if they fight through it and come out the other side, they seem to be very happy, good drivers.

Day 9 Backing Group. The 3 of us left in my group tested out on all our backing maneuvers today, we all passed. We move on to the Driving portion of Training tomorrow, and the 5 that have been driving will begin Backing Maneuvers. This was a very humid week in GA and I am looking forward to the A/C in the cab. lol. Can't wait to get out there and start driving the real roads..
josepholson Thanks this. -
Do you guys feel it's more beneficial to be in the driving group or backing group first? Or neither.

I can only speak for myself, I was glad to do Backing first, because that was what I was most anxious about having never driven a tractor trailer before. Normally when you read these boards, you hear about someone that was sent home because they couldn't properly back. In fact, one of our group went home. All I can say is this. Listen to your instructors and ask questions. Our Instructor was more than willing to talk us through a maneuver or get in and ride through the maneuver with us. If your having a problem, speak up.josepholson and Shake77 Thank this.

Day 9
I went home last night incredibly concerned about today. When I wasn't sleeping, I was busy worrying about how I'd do.
We started our day late today, since we got back late last night. I was the first to jump in the driver's seat; if I'm going to be kicked out then I'm not going to delay the inevitable.
It went... Well, it went okay. My shifting was a lot better, but I still have this problem where - as I release the clutch - I'll get to just before the sweet spot as it is catching, and then just completely release it. For the life of me I don't know why I do it. I've stalled the truck several times.
We drove between Cartersville, Georgia and a little past Fort Payne, Alabama again today. My leg of the trip was from Cartersville to Cedartown, Georgia.
Anyways, I did have several snafus but I think (or hope) I'm getting better at it. I did have Greg cuss at me today for one instance of popping the clutch. I am happy to say that I am starting backing tomorrow.josepholson Thanks this. -
Your going to do well Finalsomnia.. Think positive. Trust you instincts as you have been taught. If you have any problems backing. .. Make sure you get out and ask Jamie how to do it better. Make sure to GOAL. (Get Out And Look).
josepholson and Finalsomnia Thank this.
