If home time is very important to ya get with a company who won't be on your ### about it.
Like if you wanted an extra day or two they wouldn't act like the world is coming to an end...
..or get all technical, "You logged out of the e log at blah blah blah time so blah blah blah."
Keeping track of you down to the minute, you don't want that.
You put ya work in now it's time to get home without being harassed....

The one that said the company manual is the best advice. Everyone will tell their point of view. If you still have questions. Ask your dispatcher, fleet manager, driver business leader, coordinator, or whatever their title is consult with them, and have them to put it in writing. What I mean by put it in writing? Put it on the Qualcomm or Peoplenet. That way it's archive if there's any questions.

it's best to just stay out and not worry about home time...use Skype ... and just send the cash home....you'll earn points with ur dispatcher...

I am having a hard time understanding the point of the question. There is no legal definition of Hometime. There is a television show by that name that has a starting time.
If you are union and have a contract then you need to be concerned with specifics and your shop steward would be who you would ask.
If you are asking about the a non union shop then home time is just a phrase. Promises of being home for 3 days or so are meaningless. We don't punch a clock. If you get a chance to go home it is because they have people to cover the freight and you are in reserve for the moment. If you are promised 3 days and they call you 2 days 7 hours later, your home time is over. Remember employment is "At Will" in most of the industry. They call, you go or not go. It is up to you. But they fire you if you don't show up.
You can demand to see a company manual but there is no neutral company court for you to take your appeal to.
You just need to learn how to work with your Dispatcher. A good person to send a case of beer to.
Or join a UNION. -
To me a full day of zero hours is one home time day.
If I deliver at 1400 Saturday, I worked Saturday. My home time starts at 0001 Sunday.
That was how my first DM figured it, and it is how I have done it since then.
Never had a problem doing it that way.
But then, I am out an average of 5 weeks between home times, and usually take 3 'full' days off.
That means if I deliver my home time load on Saturday, I will come back Wednesday at around 1200. -

Today's unions are for lazy people, not hard workers.Moving Forward Thanks this. -
Terrible advice @orangepicker
Turnover rate is already sky high and ya telling a new guy to forget about going home. That might be the only thing that keeps some of these people sane.
..or maybe my sarcasm meter is broken...
