I think the problem is that I have an incident on my dmv record that says hazmat was involved, but it was not a hazmat incident. Laundry detergent ended up spilled on the road and they brought hazmat in. Guess I will not be working for Walmart. Sad that they could not have even offered me an interview to explain the situation. It was nonpreventable but the load was strapped in and the straps broke when a car cut me off
do they hire older drivers?

OK. Sorry to hear that. The accident is not against you but I guess with hazmat being involved they must look at it differently. Best of luck to you .

Hazmat was not supposed to be involved. It was not a hazmat liquid. I showed the hazmat team, the fire police etc it was not hazardous, but a guess the stupid DOT cop wrote it up as hazardous. I did not have a placard on the truck because it was NOT hazardous. I even showed them it was not in the book. EPA guy even said it was not hazardous. MSDS sheet did not have it on it.
I am definitely going look into it. I hope I can get it changed.
Thanks everyone! -
I am not sure exactly what they were talking about if you have your HazMat endorsement. I am one of the drivers who handle a lot of the hazmat. WM had a couple of bad incidents a few years ago with hazmat and paid mega-millions in fines and almost lost their hazmat permit. They have been anal about hazmat ever since. I would say right now that nobody does hazmat like we do. We even have to give things like PingPong balls special treatment, if you can believe that.

What about having a CDL for the past 41 years, but have not driven in the past 27? Verifiable 5 years grocery driver (safe driver award)' no criminal history, no accidents, no tickets?

Second career Thanks this.

I have all the paperwork that says incident did NOT involve hazmat so I am going to go to DOT to try to correct my record. Not sure how to do that though.
I don't understand how a DOT cop can say something is hazmat when it clearly is not.
I just passed my hazmat exam again so still have hazmat endorsement. Maybe a call to the local HR department is in store. -

We just put on 2 drivers about a month ago and one was 54 and the other was 64. I would say they hire older drivers. If you are 40 years old or younger than you're a young kid at Wal-mart. The last number I heard was that the average driver at Wal-mart is 52 years old and we have one driver that drives part time that is 82.
Getting your own tractor or program depends on several factors like, how many retires or transfers to other DC's, or transfers into your DC's. When someone transfers they go on the bottom of the board for six months than they get their seniority back and will be on top of the list for a tractor or program.Buzzard2157 Thanks this. -
