capnhector, I to would like to get out and see more of the country. Unfortunately, almost all of the companies pay by the mile. I couldn't work like that and don't know how a lot of these company drivers do it. I am sure there are exceptions like I have no wife, the truck is my home or they just enjoy so much that money doesn't matter to them. Has anyone thought about how much it costs to live out there. What does it cost to eat (healthy) for 2 or 3 meals a day. What about taking a shower every day. What about laundry and personal grooming items.

What is there time schedule like. Do they start and end there day at relatively the same time or are they fighting to sleep or stay awake.

What happens to them when arrive at a shipper or reciever. Are they paid for all of there time sitting there or do most just sit there and give there time away. If they are lucky, they might have to only give up two hours. How generous of there company!

Heres a good one. I have seen a lot of companies advertising that drivers can make up to 50K per year to start. That seems like a good nuimber but is it true or BS. How much do they actually make. If they take out the amounts from what I said above, how much are they left with. Lets not forget how much you pay for medical insurance and retirement.

After they figure that out, lets just hope they get the miles that help them try to get 50K a year.

It looks like you should do your 2 years a find a good local company. Good luck to you.

What's the consensus going to be when the companies start to turn back their trucks to save on fuel?

I think that there are any number of things that will happen. The one that really comes to mind is they will drive illegally more than ever to make up for lost time. That jepordizes more and more people out on the road including my family. To think that someone has to lie on there logs to make money. What a dismall way to earn a living.
