Need to get my numbers. Who do I call first, have my Ins agent getting me a quote on coverage today. Do I call TxDot next? And I plan to haul outta state on occasion. Do I need to go somewhere and get inspected? Truck and trailer? Thanks in advance

I would suggest that the first thing you do is join OOIDA. They will then walk you through the entire process and send you reminders on what taxes need to be filed when. I believe for a small fee they will take care of those forms and filings as well. (They also have great health/dental insurance and a fairly priced disability plan should you want those as well.)

If you only want to haul intrastate in Texas, you need your TX authority. The cost is $200. If you want to haul interstate you will need your motor carrier authority from the feds. You can apply for the dot number the same time you file for authority. Interstate authority costs $300. Before either will be issued or granted, you will need active insurance on file along with registered agents for the MC. You will also need to pay your UCR. You should be able to title your truck but won't be able to get your IRP without insurance or authority.

Just went through this myself. Took about a month for the authority to go active. Unless you plan on driving the truck for any reason other than hauling loads like getting work done on it you might as well hold off on the plates for a bit. You will also need a drug consortium which ooida can handle for you. Some states require proof of 2290 being paid before you can register the truck . As far as the trailer check into registering it in Maine. Far cheaper than most states.

You have forms to fill out, proof of insurance and more hoops to jump through. MOBee is right. Join OOIDA. They get you through it.
