03 columbia with a detroit
air governor was acting up about a week ago, bought a new one ($20) kept it in the truck
well last night as i was parking at home for the night, just as i put it in reverse, the thing started spewing air
got up this morning, took out the old, put in the new
the old one kept air at about 100-110
this new one keeps the air at 135-140, and may let it drop to 125 before it kicks in again
the air drying is pissing, the tandem air leveler is pissing air, took it to local TA, they say its normal
also stopped at the local Frieghtliner, and they too said its normal
any thoughts? it is weird hearing my air dryer going (pissing a little oil too, but not much, i may change the filter)
but mostly i want to know is this thing going to blow up? (everyone says no, but i am not sure)
Changed my air governor today

is it (pissing) constantly? you can adjust the pressure on the air governor unless it is a sealed one. take rubber cover off and loosen lock nut and adjust accordingly. if the dryer is acting up the spitter valve is probably getting weak. can get a spitter valve replaced and air dryer filter replaced. but some times it is easier and cheaper to just replace the whole dryer.EZX1100 Thanks this.

Adjust the governor so your max pressure is about 120 PSI. If the dryer is leaking out the exhaust all the time you can do the valve buy my experience with that has not been good. I prefer to install a new unit and be done with it. Filter should be changed yearly and if you are showing oil at the exhaust it might be time for a compressor too. My 2 cents.

Change your purge valve.
Check the price of the valve against the cost of a new air dryer. It might be worth it to replace the whole air dryer. I got an air dryer replaced in a TA shop for a '98 International for around $150 plus labor.EZX1100 Thanks this. -
if governor has blue cap on the bottom, it is the newer type & cannot be adjusted. this type does build up more pressure than the older ones. I use them. I like them better,

Not to mention there are different rated PSI's for governors. I haev always been asked which one I want when buying them at Detroit etc.

i appreciate the advice
but i need to know, according to what i described, is there any damage being done? -
Technically, yes. What this means is that the compressor is running all the time, which would increase the wear on the compressor components. In actuality, probably not, because the compressor is made to run.
Vague, I know. I had this issue once. The biggest problem I had was from a driver parked next to me at a truck stop that was pissed that I parked next to him with the air dryer purging every minute. I moved, but I did let him know that if he couldn't sleep in a noisy truck stop that he probably needed to find somewhere else to park, or reconsider his career choice.EZX1100 Thanks this.
