That is why I started this thread. I have been going back and forth on this. And I will continue to do so until I either decide to take the leap or hold off until I can conduct more research.

don't buy anything over 03. and dump 5 or 10 grand in it. It will take better care of you then the new trucks with all the pollution control in then. 04 and up. JUNK.

You only live once. Give it a go and have a pile of cash to hold you for cash flow and unplanned costs, as well as an exit plan. Nothing wrong with giving it a go and deciding it's not for you at some point. Plenty of carriers out there looking for o/o if your own authority doesn't work out for you. Just don't be too quick to pull the plug.

Another thought, why don't you buy your own truck and stay in your lease a while longer with a paid for truck. Run that way for 6-12 months to work the equipment bugs out, then get your authority and take a stab at running independent.

That's kind of what my wife and I came up with. I will buy the truck next spring, lease it on here for the next 2-3 years to get more money saved up. I want to go into this debt free and with no less than $15k in the bank.

There is some very good information from current O/O's in this thread, take it to heart. Your above statement makes very good sense as well, make sure you have funded the house hold bank and the truck bank for at least 6 months of operating expenses for home and truck. Further more, don't forget to join OOIDA, they can help you will all the paper work and they also offer a load board when the time comes. I would encourage you to lease on with Landstar, they have one of the best deals out there right now and they have a good freight selection.

In the midst of buying insurance for everything to run your truck, don't forget the medical, dental and disability for you. You will pay more to get a real disability policy, but since you are insuring your truck and yourself it will be needed.

If this is your dream, with careful planning.....................follow it.

Do yourself a favor buy an older truck say a freightliner classic around 98-02 pay cash no truck payment, parts are readily available and the older trucks are way better then these new ones.

MObee, yep I already am an OOIDA member.
Poppa, that is the current plan. I actually found an FLD120 with a 3406C and super 10 that I could pay cash for today. Just dont feel like having it sit for a year lol.
