Well some of you got a taste of what we occasionally get here in Cali.
The strangest experience I had during a shaker was the Whittier Narrows quake http://www.earthquakesolutions.com/id63.html
in '87. I was driving on the I-5 just before the 710 when it hit. I thought I had a flat tire at first and was pissed because I just bought my new truck just days before. I went to pull over to the shoulder when I noticed other people were stopped checking their tires out. Then I saw the street lights shaking. The weirdest part was that the pavement was rolling up and down like swells on the ocean:biggrin_25524:

I was driving to Indy C-1 campus when the quake hit. At first I thought it was just their rough roads up there until I saw the utility poles shaking. Some of the guys back at the flea bag hotel they put us up in said it was shaking very bad, stuff falling off of tables etc. No major shock to me there because if a car backfired around that hotel the concussion of it would cause that raggedy place to shake a little.

    You got THAT right, LAMarie.
    I used to like the view from high bridges-- from a 4-wheeler, even a set-high(er) 4X4 peek-up.
But the view from a Big truck can give me the willies. :yes2557:

There's one up in Michigan that I TRY to forget. Whenever I hear the name -- I have flash-backs.

    Then, there are tunnels.
    L o n g tunnels.
    Even under water! :biggrin_2551:

    And drivers who go

    HONK -- HONK :biggrin_25510: :biggrin_25526: :biggrin_25516: :biggrin_2552:

You thinkin of the Mackinaw bridge? Thats a cool bridge. You can look thru the grating into the water.

    Right ON!
    I remember THAT one!

And the "Landers Quake" back in the, what now, the 19 eighties?
I was in Banning when that one hit.
For those folks who might not know -- that's the California Desert and close enough to the epicenter to getcher attention.

I was sleeping in a bunk -- at the end of a narrow access road.
I awoke to what sounded like a BIG BIG truck haulin' buttox.

I remember thinkin', what dumb driver would be doin' that, when

    W H A MMMM !!

    Rock N' Roll !!

I rememberd hearing that sound once before, sleeping in the bed of an F-250 in the mountains -- under the stars.

GF's dog was sleepin' too. A Doby.
But that wasn't the problem --- but something was -- because
that dog got real upset, all of a sudden, and with in 5 minutes -- the ground shook. I thought it was someone goofing around when I realized the peekup, being almost brand new, and sprung for 6,800---> 7,200, would take a lot to shake it like that -- When I heard that one comin' -- it sounded more like a powerful freight train.
No trains had been through there before -- or they'da left their tracks. So I figured it weren't that.

    W H A Mmmm !!

Right after the quake quaked, the dog settled down, and went back to sleep.

ANOTHER time, and I SWEAR this is a true story, and just might qualify for another thread ---

But I was in Buena Park, SoCAL, in the 1970's when a good one hit in the early morning.

Gf (same one btw) worked dayz and I worked swing shift someplace else. She was an early riser, and so was I that morning -- in more ways than one.

It was just getting to that
"certain part" -- where the organ plays -- when the radio station suddenly went off the air. Then a second later

    Rock & Roll

    Dad-GUMMIT!
If it'da hit one second LATER -- maybe it would have been mistaken for the organ music.

I don't remember hearing that one coming.
Probably because GF and I were makin' our own noise.
    I reckon. :biggrin_25523:

I felt it. I had just went to bed and the whole house started shaking. First thought in my head of the movie The Exorcist. Then felt the after shock at 10:15 CDT. No damage except my desk is leaning a lil.
