Air in the fuel will cause white smoke, you might want to put a preasure guage in the system and see if the preasure holds, remove the return hose and see if it dribbles, if it does change the regulator facing up in the secondary fuel filter check the return line for air after start up the next day to be sure you got all the air out. Many people recommend changing both regulators in the filter head.
Just a thought!

It's probably #5 cyl. It runs the hottest, and warps the injector seat.
-
Well a little update, Pulled all the injectors, one at a time and found broken O-rings on 1,5,6. installed all new orings, even on the injector that was installed earlier. Still had a miss and smoke on first startup. Hauled my baby to the dealer where a cat mechanic can get a diag tool on it and maybe nail down the problem. aint got time or the patience anymore for hunting and throwing money at a problem. So thanks to all that have given me advice and ideas. will post back with details on the fix. NOW
for the million dollar question: If you sheer off the bolt you use to lock the flywheel at TDC, does the hole go all the way thru the flywheel, can you just push the broken piece thru and collect it at the bottom of the housing, or is it a blind hole. and now you have to remove the flywheel to remove the pin? just curious. -
The reason that your o-rings are going bad, is because your injector seats are warped, allowing combustion gasses to get to the o-rings, causing premature failure. Contact me. I can repair your head on the truck.

Hmm, dunno what happened to my earlier response. Insert a stick magnet and draw out the broken piece.upallnite Thanks this.

would replacing the injector cups do the same thing?
-
No, The injector does not even touch the injector cup. It only seats in the head. Cat has no repair. They say, replace the head.
-
does your method also work on ser 60 detroits? I know of a few drivers who have white smoke on start up, but only in cold weather.
-
No, Detroit injectors seat in the injector tube. Detroit heads have to be removed to replace the tubes.
heavyhaulerss and upallnite Thank this. -
UPDATE:
Well the truck is finally back in my driveway, and after a platinum overhaul the problem is fixed. As beenjammin pointed out, and after several weeks of trouble shooting, the dealer found #4 cyl washed out and, the headgasket burnt between #4 and #5.Thanks for all the help.
