Should i still go to the oil field?

I'm not sure the oilfield is something you can bank on for long. For every boom there's a bust and depending upon what you want to do after that it can be very good experience I'm sure. On the other hand people will always need to eat and people will always mail order stuff

 

If you could get in with ups freight I would do it. Its a teamsters shop and the pay and benefits along with job protection are strong. You will not find that security in the oilfield.



My friend has been w them for like 15 years and will be retiring next year. He has very little bad to say about it. Deriving for brown is probably terrible though.

There are less physical jobs in the oilfield but most are still going to be somewhat strenuous.

 

Go UPS. No question.

 

The Bakken will need guys for years to come. Every fall, the wussies up and leave for greener pastures and everyone scrambles for enough help. While the boom is over, the transition is being made to long-term sustainable industry. Housing prices are still expensive, but not as mad as a couple years ago. Good money can still be made... I am on track to make $97K in my first year with full benefits paid by the company (medical/dental/life/disability), and that's with me taking 6 weeks off.

Can't beat those numbers with a stick.

 

I think that USP would be the best bet for a long term career. That being said, I think their is still awhile to go before the oil boom bust's. The money can be better and if you played your cards right and don't go nutty you can bank quit a bit.

It's all in what you want, how hard you wish to work and having a good exit plan, just in case.

Oilfield can be rough and don't expect having a life. Can be good though to make a lot of money faster. UPS is a good long term way to pay down your debt as you build a career. Can have a family too. I would go with UPS if the money was adequate enough. If I went oilfield I would go with Baker Hughes or Halliburton. Good luck.

 

My son was hired by Baker Hughes as an Operator II. They offered him $19/hour after he came from making $1750 per week. He didn't even respond to them. Now I know where they make their cash....off the backs of employees. Screw them.

 

UPS package deliver is a tough job just like food service delivery.

I vote oilfield. There you have opportunity to network face to face in the field. Who knows? In a few years you may have talked your way into a higher paying career. Might be a flowback tech with Cameron, have a 1wk on/1wk off schedule, company truck, full benefits, and earning $140k/yr ! I know a high school drop out doing just that. He started as a drill hand for a couple years and was offered a well service job. All on the job training with a small company starting out. They hire guys with good attitudes and strong work ethic. The specific skills can be taught. The first two character traits cannot be taught.
