Just like the title says, seriously thinking of buying a trailer. I am leaning towards a Trail King, as that is all I have ever pulled, and I am comfortable with the build quality of them. More than likely will want a mechanical trailer, unless I can be convinced that a hydraulic trailer with a pony motor (in good condition) will not give me problems in the northern US winters. I would actually prefer a hydraulic trailer because they are easier on the truck when picking up a loaded trailer.

Has to be a three axle with the provisions for either a flip and or a stinger/ booster. What is the difference between a stinger and a booster?
I want to be able to add an axle(s) to meet the frost law requirements in MN and ND.

Drop side or flat floor with the center open? Drop side would be nice for the majority of what I do, but a flat floor (what I pull now) is handy for those odd loads once in a while. Gensets, crates, etc.

Trailer must have a 29' well, trailer I pull now is 29'9" in the well, with the neck flipped down it is 57'6" total length. Reason for the longer well is I haul a lot of Cat haul trucks that need to be close to the neck and far from the first axle, normally at 57,500 on the trailer, they will not work weight wise in a 26' well with a triple, they do work with a quad though. But, I really don't want to drag another axle around all of the time just for the haul trucks.

Swing out outriggers, bent d-rings, etc.

    45, 50, 55 ton?

Trailer must also have a neck or flip neck that can give me 127" from the center of the king pin to the front of the neck, with a 300" wheelbase I need that to get weight up front.

Thoughts and ideas from those that have been there done that are welcomed.

Go with the pony motor hydraulic unit. I beleive it's wise to keep away fro the pto and the tank and the stupid hoses all over the place under the truck, and mechanical detach can be a headache. Get a little Honda to run it. They are very dependable. I would try and find one that had a way to disengage the pump when starting, as when it's really cold they don't like to turn that cold hydraulic fluid and pop off at the same time.

Me and my dad have thoughts of working for Brite Logistics. My dad wants to buy the trailer new. I would like to add undertray system to trailer and crossfire.

I would go with a 55 ton at a minimum.

Are you thinking ordered new or purchased used?

If I bought new I think I could order one when the company that I am leased to orders and take advantage of their discount. (Don't know what that is yet)
I would buy used if the price was right and the trailer was taken care of.

I might think about a 60 ton mechanical with a 13 ft neck and a 4 ft flip neck. I also might think about setting it up as as 2 axle re-enforced to run as a 2+2, then you can run as a 3, 3+1, or 4 also.

I wouldn't probably go with detachable wheel area as putting in the extra sections is a pain in the #%#.

My reasoning on the 60 ton would be leased to a HH company, you probably could use one of their jeeps to jump up and move some of the border line 8/9 axle freight.

The trailer wouldn't work for Cali but that may not be an issue for you.

With you having to run a lot on IL a closed 4 axle won't help you.

The 2+2 might get you the weight you need to scale some of the bigger excavator/dozers

Tell her to give me a call. I'll make the numbers sound simply amazing!
After spending @2hrs sorting out the "new" trailer, I may be right behind you......Although a 40 or 45 ton will work for me just fine.

Try for a package group rate discount..
My wife was kinda pissed when I bought my big trl. Then later she got to like the the trl. and even did her Thai. blessing on it.
Sad day when we made the call to sell it as the down turn in the market and other factors.

The trl. will be your new mistress, ask Ron. lol

    Rontonio Thanks this.
