only certain companies do the GI bill apprenticeship thing. Melton does not do it.....unless the changed it very recently. I started driving while on terminal leave. So I was getting my navy E7 pay plus my mile pay for 2.5 months

Melton is a part of the military apprentiship program. after i finish cdl school and if i get picked up by melton (fingers crossed) then i will be doing it. i know TMC does it as well but every time i talk to them they say they are not hiring in the norfolk va area right now.
-
that must be a recent change. But I am glad they got on board. Although I don't think I would have used it. Between my retirement pay and my regular pay I do pretty good. I started with Melton last year with 4 months experience after driving for May trucking. The miles I got right out the gate took care of me and my wife.

thats good too hear about the miles... im worried cuz i need to get working... ive been out of the navy since july 1st and school dosnt start till aug 4th. i have yet to get my letter from the g.i. bill so it will pay for the school, and if it dosnt come by the last thursday of july i will prob have to bite the bullet and go with a company sponsored training because i was really wanting to go with melton or tmc. i hate being unemployed for so long with nothing to do and we cant afford for me to be out of work with zero income for too long as this was unplanned.

I would recommend doing whatever you can to pay for a private school. If you go to a company school, you'll sign a contract saying that you will drive for them for X amount (usually around 1 year) of time or you will pay them for the schooling.
-
I would concur with above. Try not to go with a sponsor company. You may wind up with a miserable company and if you don't fulfill your contract you wind up paying them back. I did use my gi bill for school and it was taken care of pretty fast. So hopefully you wont have any problem.

Roger Guys thanks for the information. I am really leaning towards Melton. Any of you trainers or know one close to Chattanooga Tennessee? Should I plan to be away from Home the entire training period?
-
I'm going to go this route as well, going to use my G.I. Bill to pay for truck driving school and then hopefully go to work for Melton, and participate in the V.A. apprenticeship program. I agree with waiting if you can for the letter from the V.A., going through company sponsored training is essentially indentured servitude.

Did you fill out the online 9-11 GI Bill request? I got my VA letter via email about two weeks after I made the request and sent that to Roadmaster (4 Aug class) and to my recruiter at Melton. She is suppose to call me on 5 Aug (second day of school) to finalize orientation on 25 Aug at melton. PM me if I can assist?
-
yes i did i filled it out last thursday of june. was told the boston VA office had a turn around of 12 days and havnt heard anything and no one will tell me whats going on on the phone thats why im a bit worried. cuz all of the schools around here start early aug and if i dont get it in time i will have to either wait till sept for school or go with company school and the prob is the longer i wait the more of a bind im in.
