Well I dont know how they are now but I pulled intermodal for them in the 90's from Atlanta to Birmingham and I enjoyed it. Their equipment wasnt that bad, I made anywhere from 700-900 a week and was home every night.

Okay did you make 63k in your first year as a new hire?

I do know one guy who made 73k in his first year in intermodal in HBG but he worked way more than 95% of drivers want to work. Many of my coworkers make in the 65-68k range but they have a few years under their belt and therefore have a higher cpm than a new hire.

I think to be fair and accurate to a perspective new hire you give estimations realistic for a driver who will be starting at the bottom of JB's pay scale and 54-60k isn't really realistic in your first year working 5 day weeks. Work 6 days 20 weeks a year then maybe but I think to quote a fleet average and quote it to a new hire and suggest he can achieve the fleet average in the first year working 5 day weeks is dishonest in my opinion.

I ran mostly ky and back since I live down here and I ran Iowa a lot on the weekends back and forth. I started at .42cpm. I was always in the 2700-3100 mi week range. Sure some weeks little less but I had det time. Ok when I say 2 full days I would get home by 2pm every single Tuesday and would leave by 2pm every thur. Maybe I set my eta just right . I'm telling you what I made. Sure some make less and some will make more. If you don't believe me I could give 2 ##### really .

Oh.... So you are a regional driver. Not a local driver like the position the OP was inquiring about.

You are a regional driver that typically goes into the railyard once per day, not 3-5 times like a local driver would. You spend the majority of your time racking up miles on I-65 not sitting in gridlock on local roads in the Chicago suburbs. You drive a sleeper truck which you keep uninterrupted for the week and are able to work the entire 14 hours instead of having to return it back to the terminal for the next driver after 11-12 hours like a local driver. Your pay structure is different, your runs are longer, your territory is different and the customer base is different.

Not only did you weigh in with no knowledge of the operations in Harrisburg, PA which the OP was considering, but your experience is with a driving job that is altogether different than what the OP was asking about. Somehow you left that little detail out.

My comments were under the pretense of a local intermodal driver with a familiarity of the pay structure, the working conditions and the constraints a local driver faces.

Congrats on your accomplishments as a regional driver, I have no reason to doubt you as your pay is pretty common among regional intermodal drivers at JB Hunt. Unfortunately the details about your experience have little to no relevance and without disclosing the tidbit about being a totally different job is just as deceiving as some of the worst recruiters.

Going to orientation in Columbus, OH for the Chicago regional intermodal on July 21. Trying to find out what to expect and what is their inverter policy (allowed, size, installation, etc). I appreciate the help.

They will feed you breakfast and lunch, dinner on your own. Couple days of class and do your road test and get finalized. Inverter policy is as long as it plugs into the 12v lighter plug its ok. If you run a CPAP machine then they will put a larger one in at the shop.

Do they give you a tractor after the last day of orientation? Or do they send you out with a trainier?

I orientated in Chicago and did regional out of Kansas City. I showed up in KC and was assigned a truck. I then shadowed another driver around for a week. In other words they both gave us the same exact loads and just followed each other around.
