Just an fyi. So far 5 of our 2013 petes and KWs with ISX 15s have been overhauled due to exessive oil usage. Mine was going through 8 + gallons in 20,000 miles. Now another one is having the same issue. What they are finding us 4 corner scoring on the liners and pistons.

Carbon packing on the rings. Been overhauling the ISX 15 like crazy for it. The early 2250s we have been cutting the blocks for liner protrusion. Haven't seen 4 corner scoring yet.

There is a TSB from Cummins about this, TSB140030. There are a series of liners that they are calling "lobed". Seems to be a manufacturing defect and the liners are not perfectly round, but have 13 equally spaced vertical lobes or high spots in the wall of the liner that prevent the rings from seating and allow carbon packing of the rings. These engines are experiencing oil consumption as bad as 500 miles per quart of oil. These are ISX15 models, mostly 2013 engines. The liners would have to be inspected if the engine is suspect to have these defective liners. The liners have a date code laser etched on them. They don't say if they are etched at the top or bottom, so I am not sure if the head or pan has to come off to simply check for the code, but you are likely to be taking the head off anyway. Affected part numbers are; 4311632, 2882464, 3685235 and 4101507. Liners with a date code of XPLZ 271 3 1 and later are ok. (271 is the day of the year, 3 is the year 2013, 1 is first shift). Any liner with a date code starting with ABDJV is ok not matter the date.

We've had 3 out of 4 rebuilt due to this issue. The fourth has been fine and is a few hundred unit#s higher than the other three so they must have figured it out.

I know this post is rather old but does anyone know if this is covered under a recall or a warranty.
