thealfa, your gut feeling is correct. 6 months is way to long. $10K is way too much money. The reason that tech is calling you, is that he has big dollar signs in his eyes. Trust your gut. Are you looking for a school? See my post under "Crowder College".

Its the Federal government (Department of Education) who requires a 600 Hour Program to access FAFSA funds. Any truck school you attend that accepts FAFSA funds will hold national accreditation; therefore, giving you a sense of ease as to their legitimacy. All private truck schools who accept FAFSA will be around the $8-$10,000 range.

FAFSA will give you a housing allowance while you attend school too. It really comes down to your circumstance, sometimes FAFSA may be the only way, unless you look into company-sponsorship. Many have done the FAFSA route.

you work for Crowder College? LOL.

The $10K tuition for a CDL A for 6 months seem fair considering the class is longer and they have to pay the instructors for 6 months and not 3 weeks. But still it is too long and expensive but it's hard to tell if they are ripping anyone off.

My other options are pay out of pocket or start calling companies willing to train and hire new drivers and work there for a year. Do I call each company or is there a listing somewhere who will train and hire new drivers? Considering some companies are in need of drivers, I don't know why they couldn't just train and hire someone, it is faster that way.

I called up another trade school in my area. It is 10 minutes more than the school I intended to go to but it may be worth it since they offer a 10 week CDL A course and the cost is $5000 so I'm sure FAFSA money could be enough if I get it. The class is more intensive and starts from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. so it's pretty much the whole day.

Well, I am not familiar with companies that train and you sign a contract. You probably know more about that than I do.

But no, I don't work for Crowder College.

well isn't Crowder College based in Missouri? Not sure why you mentioned it to me considering I am in the northeast part of the country and you are in TX.

I was informed that I needed to have signed up for "armed services" (I think?) to get FAFSA? Is this about right? Not sure exactly what type of "services" it was but I think it has something to do with military?

I think what you have probably heard is that vets get preferred consideration with FAFSA. If you're 21, got a clean MVR then contact Roehl, Swift, Scneider, CRST, Knight, CR England and they may hire you. You have to agree to work for them for a specific length of time and they will train you. Lot's of people have gone that route.

You have to go to a private school that last for a minimum of a 20 week course, thus more cost. That is usually a college or community college. What state are you in?

Thank you I will give these companies a call. Some people have complained about "slave wages" going these route. Is it because the company knows you're new and will take advantage of you?

Oh that services thing I mentioned is "selective services". I just got a letter from the school I applied for a FAFSA and mentioned that I needed to be signed up for the selective services which I just did so they can proceed with the financial aid. Is selective services another subtle term for a draft?

oh also depending on the school, some schools also offer CDL grants depending on income and situation. I just called up another community college in my area and I will be getting an application in the mail soon. I think this is different than the financial aid FAFSA, this is more CDL specific. I'm surprised that some states have courses that are affordable and faster to finish (3 weeks, $1800, CDL A, somewhere in New Mexico, a state I wanted to move into at some point soon). I could have paid for this in cash but any free financial aid is always welcome. LOL.
