I'm using the space between the frame rails to store my spare tires. I've got locks on the sleeves to release my ramps and stands. I had a ramp stolen already. I woke to pee and as I opened the door he was trying to get the other ramp. I jumped down in my under shorts and he dived in the back of a mini van. I got locks after that.

As far as trailers go.. I want to buy new and have it configured how I need it to be. I'm prepared to spend upwards of $40-$45k for the right trailer. I know what I can spend now where I wasnt really sure how steady my setttlements would be when I first went O/O. I'm ready to play with the big boys now.

Thanks for all the advise. I'll have my work cut out finding the right trailer. Doing well so far... but still learning every day.

now i have 3 48 steps and only 1 51 all aluminum. 10 on top 41 bottom is the best setup on the battle between 51vs53, do you need a 43 bottom? rarely. IMO you really don't need a 51 or 53. A 48 all aluminum or combo will work just as fine. Save money and put that into a t660 studio which if you want it with sofa bed and ok miles it hard to find them less than 65k used and 160k new, But if you really want a long trailer get a 51 with sliding rear axle.

You really should check out the Mac. I know mine is a flat but my 53' all aluminum MAC is 2500 lbs lighter than my 48' Great Dane combo. I can haul 50,000 lbs with it and a 379 and a 45000 lb coil doesn't flatten it out. Strong and light. Only time will tell how long it will last.

IMHO. . . You really need to scale 48K with an open deck. It is easier if you have the versatality to haul heavier and may show up nicer on the bottom line. I am in a new KW 660 with the big sleeper, no sofa, just a full size lower and a smaller upper. With an all alluminum step deck and topped off it will scale at 31,100. The interior has lots of storage and when the wife rides along it gets tight, but that has more to do with the Weimaraner and his 80 pound carcass. Swing by a KW dealer and climb in one and give it a once over.

As for fuel mileage the '12 I had was 6.7 approx. for the 400K I had it, and no APU so that was with a fair amount of idle time. The '15 now is at 7 (7.4 for the first 2 months), no APU, but it has a bunk heater so from Feb. to just recently it had almost no idle time. That's running at 67-68 mph on the big road.

Hope that helps, and Good Luck!

With an all aluminum step....plus ramps and gear..........only way you are gonna scale 50k is if you are pulling it with a Datsun. I think we need to get over the notion that we HAVE to put stupid heavy general freight on a step.

For general flatbed work......wasn't that long ago 45k was your typical load. Now they EXPECT you are gonna scale on 48k.....for the same or less money. This trend toward bigger, lighter trailers has done nothing but shoot holes in our own feet.

I agree, some drivers don't think about the consequence and affect they make when they tell a agent they can scale 48k for a cheap or same rate as a 35k load. Anything over 45k is not worth the hassle and time. Anything above 50k they will pay the extra $$$ and that's worth the time and hassle, but at that point 1,500-3,000k difference on trailer weight don't really matter.

There is a lot to be said for that, this is what has brought on all of the plastic trucks that don't last.

I have been told so many times the W9 I drive is "Sooo heavy" and I just ignore them. Why because you have to love the truck you are driving or you aren't going to love trucking.

Above and beyond that, those loads that weight 48,000 lbs on the nose, always, always, always the cheap freight that doesn't pay. I am more than happy to let someone else go broke doing backflips and summer salts to try and move it. I will happily stick with demanding to be not only paid for my services but to make a proffit.

Thats exactly the info I was looking for.

    Thank you so much.

I may end up buying the KW sooner than later. I just had a sobering experience in Baton Rogue yesterday. Raining, traffic was stopped ahead of me. I came up over a blind bridge on I10 east bound. Right lane had slow traffic, so I got over in the left lane. I just hit high gear when I crested the middle of the bridge to see traffic stopped because of another truck accident about 1 mile ahead of us. I was empty and on my way to pick up a grader less than 10 mi from there. I hit the brake and the bridge surface was like snot from raining all day. I couldnt stop. I tried to put it over the rail but the truck just bounced off. There was no out except for a 3 ft shoulder on the left. I hit 5 cars. They all bounced off my right front like match box cars. There were babies in 2 of the cars. I was so distressed after I finally came to a stop. I was incoherent with 911 on the phone so my wife took the phone from me and explained what happened to them.

Fortunately there were no serious injuries. Shockingly, the victims from the other vehicles approached me to ask if I was ok. They said we saw that you could not stop. You did everything you could. I just cried. I could have killed those people. I was talking with my wife and didnt see them stopped until it was too late. It all happened so quickly. I always thought of myself as a very safe driver and I ended up in an accident like this. I got a ticket for failure to maintain control. My insurance is going to take a serious hit over this. At least 2 of the cars are totaled for sure.

As for my truck,.. I am not sure. Its going to need a new hood, the bumper is mangled and the drag link is bent. Truck was not drivable. Alignment was out so badly that it was almost unsteerable. So pending what my insurance does with the truck will determine what happens next.

All I can say is that I am thankful no one was injured. When I saw the babies in the 2 cars I almost went into complete shock. I fell to my knees and could barely stand. My wife ran around to get me and I could not stand. I've never had an accident in my life. Not even in my personal vehicles. This is the first ever. And it was completely my fault. I keep replaying the incident over and over in my head. I wish I could crawl in a hole and make it all go away. I have to find a place to take a drug test today, make some phone calls and figure out how to get all my crap out of the truck and get it home to await if the insurance totals or repairs my truck. What a sobering and awakening experience. I dont wish this on anyone. I feel so miserable right now.
