I have been driving for one year. The company I work for is pretty good, but not perfect.
    I know none are.

Some of the negatives 31cents per mile, I should feel lucky the new drivers are getting 28, BAD SIGN!
Cant take truck home, dont have car and have to drop at yard 6 hours from home and wait for driver
going my way to get there.

Company run by spoiled owners son and a beancounter. Starting to notice mega tendancies

Have been putting out apps/resumes and have a small company (7) trucks compared 1000 for present company in my hometown wanting to hire me.

My question is this. I have a weeks paid vaction mid August and the new company is willing to wait. If i clean truck out at their yard 6 hours away while not under load, secure new position, enjoy vacation and wait for funds from prior company to hit bank is there abandonment issue?

In addition there is always a delay in getting me back to yard 6 hours away and i believe i could use this to my advantage to stall a little
If there is issue waiting for money to hit for vacation and any slow prior paying loads.

Once all the dollars are in and new job etched in stone, send resignation letter thanking them for opportunity.

    Any advice/knowledge appreciated

What I did recently is take a leave of absence (maybe under false pretenses?), gives you ample time to shake hands with the new employer, do their drug / road / physical tests, etc...

Then when the deal is sealed with the new company, call your current employer and advise them of what's going on.

As far as the abandonment goes, if you drop Their equipment on Their property... what's been abandoned?

I would say don't wait for your vacation though, every day with a bad company is a Long day...

A small company (especially 7 trucks) won't have that position open forever.

I'd take the better deal and move on asap.

Talk to your supervisor and, if he won't match/beat the offer, give 2 weeks' notice. He may then acquiesce, he may not. Either way you've handled the situation like a professional and kept your options open.

Yep that's the way to do it. When I left my previous job to start a trucking career I gave 1 months notice and helped them find my replacement. A reputable company will pay you accrued vacation days as part of the severance package. I don't know how many trucking companies will do that though. Never burn bridges.

When you clean out the truck take pictures . LOTS of pictures. Interior, out side, fenders , mirrors. EVERYTHING so you won't be charged equlivant of pay owed to you for truck damage. Things like seats showing no cigarette burns, CB mount to show no holes drilled in dash. Tread depth. I have known companies to claim tires had been switched. . get a shot of DOT number on tire. Also when you get your other truck at new plac eof employment take picture and especially if you can get date and time on the pics. It is the best CYA you can get.

When taking pics try using a camera with date and time stamp on it.
