Hi pd, I agree with the general consensus here, you will miss a lot. While the salaries may look tempting to a newbie ( how hard could driving a truck be), you will be a wreck trying to juggle a trucking career and a family. I was a local driver, and was very lucky my ex-wife was a stay at home mom, and while I pushed myself to attend as many after school functions as I could, it burnt me out. Many times, we'd get home from something at 8 pm, and I had to get up at midnight to be to work at 1 am. Enjoy the time with your kid, as it goes by fast.

yes, you can take him to football practice 3 times a week.
you will work 40 to 50 hours a week.
the answer is a class b box truck route job with
the same start and end times everyday.
overtime on Saturday.

there should be plenty of these in Atlanta.
No,you won't get the the big bucks like the big trucks,
but you will have a steady income and not work
70 hour weeks and miss all of your sons activities.

Ive had a few of these jobs and loved them,so much
easier to get around in a city and nobody bothers you.
its the big trucks they hate.

But if you are going to get the CDL then
by all means get the class A.that covers everything.

 

I would say try to get a grant to get your CDL and go work for one of the package delivery companies(ups, fed ex, usps), also driving a bus can be a good way to get experience/ have a lot of free time to be there for your child.

 

I agree with a lot of what's being said here. Trucking hours - delivering loads, unloading, etc. can sometimes leave you with unanticipated hours. If you're getting into trucking for the income potential, be prepared to consider your initial investment cost first, (cost of school, etc.) and then realistically project where you will be in 6 months, and then 12 months. Trucking does have considerable income potential, at the same time, being a single mother, you'd have to factor in child care, as well as have a system set up where you and your kid understand your new lifestyle schedule. You could get a local job, but OTR and likely even Regional wouldn't fit with what you're looking for. I wish you the best of luck. Georgia has the HOPE scholarship, it will usually pay for a tech school cdl and also something like lpn nursing or cosmetology

 

The comdedian in me, thought you would say that the money had made her even harder to deal with and truck driving is easier than a divorce.

 

if ur kid isn't in school...then you can try running otr with the kid w you....see the USA..
