In the 17 months that I was previously at Maverick, there were only 2 weekends that I didnt get home on the weekend, and thats cause I was picking up sheetrock in Acme, TX on a Thursday and it had to be out near the coast of NC before 1 pm on Friday.

i know this thread has to do with maverick and i would like to go with mav but they have a waiting list so ill ask does anyone know about mcelroy in n.c

They are based out of Cuba AL. I know a few of their drivers. Most have to go to being a trainer to get any miles. Seems like they have went down hill the last couple of years.

Hey do you know the time a student will be with a trainer? And if a person was to come on with OTR experience but in dry van, referr, etc. What all would you have to go through. Mostly load securement i know but do you have to go OTR with a trainer to prove that or in house training available?

It all depends. When I went through orientation there were 14 of us, and 2 of us were selected to go out with trainers (The company only had 5 trainers at the time). Myself and 1 other driver. I was told it was so we could get first hand experience going in the mills and see how they operated cause we had been van drivers, but most of the people in our class had pulled vans only. The first week is usually spent on the yard in one of the shops and outside practicing securement and tarping on different sized wooden wire spools and whatever else they have like drums and stuff, and the second week is at the terminal in Ft. Smith securing loads for drivers coming in for pickup (the steel mill is across the street and drivers either go over and pick up and come back across the street to the terminal, or they pick up off the yard and the class will secure and tarp the loads). If you go out with a trainer, it is usually for 2-3 weeks. I was out for 2 weeks with my trainer.

Hey Capt Jack,
Did you enjoy your time with maverick? What didn't you like, and how come you left them? I have been accepted into their "specialized div" cause I live on LI,NY they seem like a driver friendly company, are they? I am exspecting a call any day now to attend orientation,my name has come up on the "list"! I have just started at a local wholesale food distribution company, but does not thrill me to be a gloried delivery boy. I make 10 to 18 stops a day, with a 2-wheeler, up/down stairs. I work 8 to 14 hours a day depending on the route,I get up at 3am every morning, sound like fun yet! Any info/advice is welcome! Bug-out! -
If you have exp you will probably get cut loose soon. They will teach you their way of securing and tarping. As far as home time I left this morning and I am back at the house again tonight. How is that for an OTR driver?
