That's why i would like every truck driver to be able to account for his #'s at least as accurately as i am if not more. We can talk all day or we can just throw the #'s down on the table and see what's what. Facts don't lie.

 

I'm not an owner op and never have been so i won't pretend to be of any use in this regard. There is many tools out there for you though i do have a couple ideas.

Most OTR drivers can AVG 2500 miles per week worked and total 120k per year.If you factor the cost into 10,000 miles per month then you could break it down into a per mile cost. Let's say insurance cost you 500 per month. In this example you would be paying 5cpm for insurance.

If you have enough statistical history you could use last years avg for this month as your total for the month and divide insurance cost by that # instead Or instead you could use last years total miles and divide that by this years estimated total insurance cost to break it down to a cpm # again.

I think the trick here would be to break everything down into a cpm cost if at all practical. Basic maintenance and expected rebuilds EX. if your engine is at 1.5m you should have budgeted a certain amount in those 1.5 miles to pay for the engine rebuild if not sooner. Tires are an example of a shorter term item to save for. I usually have to change tires at 300k so if i was an owner op i would budget in the first 300k for that.

Using previous statistics (one of the reasons tracking your #'s in a organized manner is so important) you should be able to find your avg miles per year and using some experience and research you should know when to budget for major items like tires,trans/engine rebuilds,Clutch replacement.

Like the disclaimer says i've never been an owner op and don't pretend to know anything about it, but that would be my initial mindset when attacking the problem. I'd love to hear experienced owner ops who have better ideas on how they deal with it.
