Beginning Friday at midnight, 15 states will participate in a “massive public safety initiative.”
The law enforcement agencies from the 15 states will join forces across the I-90/94 corridor. The campaign is called the I-90/94 Challenge.
“It’s a big, important challenge, and it’s a real opportunity for our troopers to lead a multi-agency effort to make the interstate safer for the traveling public, ‘’ said Col. Craig Price, superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol. “We believe a combination of aggressive enforcement and high-visibility patrols will raise public awareness of the need for safe, smart behavior on our highways.’’
According to the ISP, the initiative is “aimed to reduce traffic fatalities and prevent criminal activity.”
“The Illinois State Police are taking the “Challenge” to step up enforcement patrols with aggressive enforcement on Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) safety,” the ISP said in a press release.
The Challenge beings at midnight on August 1 and runs though August 4.
Authorities will be looking for speeding, DUIs, seat belts, distracted driving, unsafe trucks, logbook violations and overweight trucks.
“Our collective efforts to ensure that this stretch of I-90/94 is safe throughout this four day saturation period will require the resources and dedication of our troopers, investigators and inspectors,” said ISP Operations Colonel Michael Zerbonia. “We are committed to supporting this multi- jurisdictional highway enforcement effort on behalf of Illinois to enhance road safety and public awareness,” he added.
The I-90/94 Challenge nearly 5,700 miles of interstate highways. Participating states include Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington.

Dropped in Ardmore and am at the Shell station. Still no preplan. Doesn't really matter now. The swap driver didn't show up til close to 1900 which meant I could only get another 300 miles in on this week. Ugh. He was supposed to get loaded at 0300 and was caught off guard when I asked him about it. I got the impression that he screwed something up. I'd been at that stupid truck stop since 1630 the day before. Gonna see if I can get some lost utilization or something out of it. Not going to push night dispatch for a load. I don't trust the peanut gallery to get me something I'd want. I will discuss it with my DM in the morning. She's usually great about making sure I'm planned up. She usually makes sure my truck has at least one plan attached to my truck, but I've had as many as three before, keeping me lined up to move for a solid week. We usually start talking preplan once I get loaded. The current inclination is that I might be looking at Friona, Amarillo, or Liberal. Friona would be great!
