And yet, once they get into a different company they're all questions and asking for help and tips. Makes you wonder how much of this is the drivers and how much is Western Express' corporate "screw it" culture.

Sooooo--- what you all are saying is, straps, bungie cords, and poly rope is not good enough? How bout if I added gorilla tape?
-
I can't even think of a way to secure a suicide coil with straps that would seem even remotely safe. I have seen drivers crisscross a couple straps over the top, but they always had proper chain securement through the eye.
-
Tmc uses a minimum of 6 chains, and then a strap across the top with edge protectors. I had 3 aluminum coils at 15k each last week, we used 4 chains with edge protectors and then a strap across the top. So it's possible to use one as extra protection, but there's no way in Hell I would go with strictly straps on a coil
-
Straps over the top help seat the coil down in the racks, and help keep the sides of the tarp off the coil. But you still need proper chaining to keep the coil in place.SheepDog Thanks this.

How about an eye to the sky coil?
-
eye to sky dpends on weight, i used 2-4 straps
-
The only eye to the sky coils they do are if the are skidded, then they x chain it with edge protectors, horseshow chains front and back, then strap from the top. They have a policy that all coils get loaded suicide anything else were to get it cleared through safety first.

It sounds like you're describing shotgun.
