Need Company Recommendations From OTR Drivers

Chinatown said it best! I heard about that story of the guy with the blowout on the scale. I heard he fought it and won and the kind Trooper found himself without a job.

 

You do not have to go with a company just because the school recommends it. Start the application process now with the online applications and don't even mention it to the school. Many new CDL grads get the best jobs by applying to companies on their own. Many aren't aware of how many companies will hire them until they do some research on this forum. I read your schools website before posting to ensure I posted valid information; your school only "recommends" certain trucking companies, as do most schools.

The manufacturing plants aren't moving back to the USA from China; they're moving to India and Vietnam. I spend a lot of time in China and read the Chinese news sites. Funny, the Chinese factory workers are complaining because their jobs are being outsourced to India and Vietnam. They thought they could get higher wages and more benefits if they complained or went on strike; instead their jobs are being moved to other countries.

 

Sooner or later, these manufacturing plants are going to run out of countries to outsource to.

 

I just went through Maverick orientation about 3 weeks ago and can offer some insight. Basically Maverick is strict but fair. They are looking to see if you have a good attitude and can follow directions. Main thing to remember is "to be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late". Maverick wants to see you succeed but they will weed out those that are, in their words "late, lazy, liars". They will not tolerate any of these 3 things but will work with you on about anything else. Good luck in your search.

 

I'd also look into Con-way truckload. (Used to be CFI) They too take student grads and I've never read a whole lot of negative on them? They're affiliated with Melton (or at least they used to be?) Anyway,good luck with whomever you choose,and stay safe out there.

 

AS Chinatown said you don't have to go with a company the school is affiliated with. I spent the better part of a week filling out app's for my husband ( he was still working, I wasn't) when he decided to go OTR. Most of the companies that got back weren't the best, he choose J.B. Hunt as having the most of what he wanted knowing that he needed OTR and more tractor trailer experience.

What I'm saying is, fill out the app's for the "better" companies that say they need more experience, all they can say is "no you don't have enough experience". That is alot of what my husband ran into, but after about 3 months at J.B Hunt, he started getting alot of calls from other companies. At 8 months He switched to Melton... Not that I would recommend doing that, pick the best company you can get and stay with them for a year or more.

 

I would say look into Averitt They have a large terminal right off 24, they run flatbed, they have APUs and they train. Might be a good fit. The down side, they are all automatics and have a dorky red "uniform" they make you wear LOL Im kind of curious why China says forget them. Disclamer, I have never run for these people b4

 

I'm curious myself about the reasoning behind Chinatown's comment about Averitt.

 

On another note,.... I only run a 1200 watt inverter, and I have a little crock pot from Walmart. Cost me 9.00$ i think. Excellent for eating healthy, I throw roast and carrots/potatoes in it in the morning , and when I get parked, Dinners ready! Bag up leftovers and throw them in the fridge, they make great burritos the next day.
My favorite so far.. Pork Roast with cabbage and red beans. But dude, somedays its tough dealing with all that delicious aroma while driving!!
