Well to be fair, there IS a shortage of quality, qualified, experienced, proven, zero-points drivers. If you don't believe me and if you are one of these drivers, go out to your truck with empty boxes and see who comes out to try and talk you out of quitting, and what they offer.

There's no shortage of steering wheel holders. Little caveat though kids. There is no shortage of drivers. These big scumbag companies like heartland don't want drivers. They want steering wheel holders. If anything I learned about being at Gordon trucking, it was truck drivers are bad. Thinking for yourself and knowing what you're doing without your hand held is a bad thing for Scumbag Express. They literally want robots. Because that's how they treat you. No thanks

I think if there was a real driver shortage retailers/restaurants ect. would always be going out of stock of goods since there aren't enough drivers to meet the demand. That's just my theory though.

My spouse has worked out the Phoenix terminal for 5 years. Yes, you read that right, 5 years. He went to Heartland when the company he worked for for over 14 years went BK due to a lot of idiotic business decisions and, of course, the 2008 crash. I can't go into specifics, but he had his come to Jesus moment last week and is now seeking employment elsewhere. He's a professional with 0 points and 25 years of experience. So, it's mostly about a company that fits his and our family's needs. Why Heartland? Equipment maintenance is a high priority for him, and Heartland is one of the best in that area. Things were good the first few years. However, even in the last two years, the company treatment of drivers has deteriorated to a level that they now treat their best with indifference and even distain.
And the fella that runs the Phoenix yard? Ugh! He's a textbook definition of an petty little ######## who utterly lacks in people skills with a Napoleon complex. But, he fits in grandly with the intrenched corporate culture at Heartland. All things with Heartland come first.
Heartland sends out an annual mailer/magazine with all the drivers of the year. Mostly, it goes on about how wonderful Heartland is and how they won all these obscure little awards from various companies they haul freight for. I always read them, and by the 3rd year I noticed a pattern, all the drivers that won DO put all things Heartland first. The articles about the drivers gush profusely about never taking vacations and "putting the interests of the company first". It's one of the most vomit inducing publications I've ever read and I've read a lot.
I'm not sure if this is true at the other terminals, but at the Phoenix terminal if you want to take more than 4 days off in a row you have to clean out your truck and turn in your keys. Not such a big deal if you live in the Phoenix area, a very big deal if you don't. Same with taking any vacation time. They make it so difficult it's almost not worth it. They micro-manage their drivers too. If it not happened that he has an awesome, kick-### DM, he would have been gone long ago.
