Swift can and will put you through school, but you will be held to the company.... if that is your only option take it, but you don't have to just look at Swift, alot of other companies will as well. Try Schneider on for size maybe? I've heard good things about them.
Have you tried looking into a technical/vocational college program? That's what I should have done.... when I got my cdl, not only was I elgible for finicial aid, but I still had a scholorship, that's now run out. Could have used it, and coupled with my finicial aid got money back while going to college, instead I went to MTC in Hazelwood MO, and still owe over $6,000.:biggrin_25521:
I think ALOT of vocational/techinical schools offer this, and then you're free to find work on your own, and not stuck with a company. It can be just as simple as feeling out a FAFSA. :biggrin_255:

sorry it took so long to write back. i was a shore tankerman in the houston ship channel working barges. not the sea going barges but 30000bbl barges. i rode tow boats for about 6 years and went shore side for 4 years. money was great but the whole being on 24hr call wore me out after awhile. my dad was an owner operator for about 20yrs til he passed away 15yrs ago. so I have always wanted to drive and when i got layed off in january figured the time was right.

why did you not stick with the boats?

Daddybear - sounds like you got a bad caseworker.. or they have different internal policies. I spent the past 15 years in IT and Telephony. Think I couldn't work for Qwest or AT&T if I wanted to?

The idea is, focus your specialties down to the point where you can't find them on the labor board web site. I was fortunate. My case worker didn't actually help me do it, or even come right out and suggest it- but when she made it clear that if there were any openings for my job description, I was doomed, I caught the hint. If you word your job description right, not even Santa Claus will hire you! :)

Maybe you should move here :biggrin_25519:

Albatross, ok. No other way to describe it. That BITES. Unless the No Child.. er um.. no worker left behind has several sources of funding and they guided you down the wrong one. I dunno. It all seemed so easy for me when I went through it, I just can't see it needing to be all that hard for anybody else!

Well the Co. i was with had the oldest boats in the fleet. I was on 3 of them but the last one I was on literally had no business on the water.
They bought it out of a scrapyard. Most of the equipment either didnt work correctly or didnt work at all. Because of that some people were badly injured or killed. I had heard about all this while i was on different ships, but thought to myself it cant be that bad or the coast guard wouldnt let it sail. Boy was I wrong. But a few months after i quit they scrapped it. It was due for the 5 year coast guard inspection that it was never going to pass. $$ was great. But I'm not dying for buck.

i would love to move to co. i got a cousin that lives in aurora, it is beautiful country up there. but I am not a broncos, nuggets or rockies fan, so that would not work.

albatros, i know what you mean about those death trap boats. I was on a 800 horse power boat sent my deckhand to the front hole for supplies, came running back to the galley soaked. asked him what happened and he said a ladder rung broke going down he fell hit the deck in the hole and litterally knocked a hole in the hole. if we were not faced up to barges would have deffinately sunk.
