This is how you go down the Cabbage!

Okay so let me ask ?

How are you to say that there is a correct way to go down a little hill ( and yeah its a little hill ) been west of Denver on 70 plenty of times at 10K..... and have been down donners pass. More then once.... ( hahaha yeah in less then a year... )

 

I like taking trainees through the Rockies on I-70. My trainee now got to do it three times. First time with 10K in the box and no problems. Second time with 20K in the box and he began to see the difference. Last time with 46K in the box and and it was another animal. Note that all these passages were in ideal weather, dry roads, during the day, with little traffic.

I also explained to him that it becomes a ferocious animal in the winter. Consider taking that 46K load through there when the chain up requirements aren't lit up yet, but a snow storm verging on a blizzard hits that summit area. Then what? Not a lot of options for stopping and pulling over when the snow plows have built walls of snow on either side. You have to run on through without chains and be able to control that load coming down SLICK 6% grades while ski bunnies go blasting by in their 4 wheel drives.

Every time down a given grade will be a different experience. Bottom line is there is a right way to go down a hill, and it means minimal use of service brakes if at all, and maintaining a speed where you are going to be able to come to a controlled stop as needed within your ability to see ahead.

Your description of coming down in "heavy fog" at 50 mph by definition would mean you wouldn't have been able to stop within your line of sight. The option of just "going around" doesn't apply if all lanes are blocked, unless you mean to "go around" by deliberately saving other lives by committing suicide down the side of the mountain.

 

Sorry Sir, I don't want to irritate you but, this is the experienced trucker advice forum. And I am that. If someone pays attention and one life is saved then it's worth it. I have covered the 48 states numerous times and parts of Canada. Been over most of the mountains numerous times. Hauled jet fuel thru the Colorado mountains in winter. Have found myself in most of the bad situations that give the old hands nightmares. Yet, I'm still around.
So, my best advice is to always give the mountains respect. You will be far ahead if you are prepared for the worst, every time. Why? Because that's exactly when it will bite you, when you least expect it.
Now, as far as a little hill. Well, hammer down looking for a higher hole. That's the old chicken hauler method. But, I don't consider Cabbage to be a 'little hill'. That's what we're talking about here. I admit that it's been a while since I've seen it. Maybe they have reworked it and now it's just a little hill. Can't say but, the problem is that so many unexpected things can happen and they tend to happen very quickly. Trust me, there will be enough 'oh ####' moments in your career without setting yourself up for them.

Cabbage is a little hill. And people say "oh yeah 10 -20k ) in the box .. hahhaha

Go down parleys with 43k all but maxed out and and have people almost run you off the road because we have so many "super truckers" out there now a days.. lol Go down a real ####### mountain maxed at 80k then ######## with me ....


Oh yeah. Less then a year by the way...

And when I said 10k I meant elevation. .....

 

Wait...Cabbage isn't a real mountain?

 

It is , but not terribly bad.
I mean you were say heavy haul at say 105k then yeah ....

 

LOL. Now that's funny stuff right there. Believe it or not, I have read lots of your posts and thought you to be a fairly sane fellow. Hopefully now you're just pulling my leg for fun. Or something else.

If you do actually only have one years experience driving, I would think that you would be at the stage of listening to other drivers experiences and trying to learn from them and also from your own, instead of trying to convince everyone on here what a hot shot you are. I have been driving for almost 50 years and still learn things, and yes some times it is a younger driver. About the time you think you know it all is about the time you are going to crash and burn, and you can take that to the bank.
