What I have learned in my short time in the industry is that you have to work hard to make a living and as one very honest recruiter told me in the beginning, its one of the toughest jobs and not everyone can do it.

You have to realize that it doesn't matter what company you run for, you will always be just a number and a face to go with it. Very few care about what you want and you serve one purpose and that is to move that truck down the road and generate money.

Hardly anyone will care if you ever get home, they won't care enough to listen to your oh it's my kids birthday next week, can you get me home. What will get you home is a paying load. They will let you have a few days off, as long as your willing to dead head somewhere close to your next load and if it comes down to paying you detention pay while waiting for a load, they will give you a few days off, this way, your not wasting company money while waiting for that next load.

This is a very tough career and if you value being home more than anything else, this is probably not for you. Usually the one's who suggest you try trucking are those who think this is a kick ### career and you'll make a big paycheck. They never did it and if they had a choice of driving a truck or being a cashier somewhere, they will choose cashier.

If you value having a steady schedule, this is not going to be for you because you will drive day, night, night, day, weekends, holidays, it's what ever must be done to get that load delivered. You may arrive on a Saturday morning at 8 am only to find the receiver is closed until Monday, so you may end up sitting there for two days waiting.

I suggest you think this thing through very carefully.

I completely understand this statement. My husband was in corrections when we made the change. I was working dispatch at another agency and we both were going through what you stated above. We team drove, so it is a bit different than you, since your wife will not be coming along, but we really enjoyed it. As my husband likes to say, "Now I don't have to deal with the political crap. If someone is stupid or being an #####, now I can tell them!" Yeah, he had to work on his "people" skills after getting out of LE!! :)

Best of luck to you. I think you will enjoy the freedom of it. Just know that there will be some long days and you will miss home, but you will find a groove to get into and it will all be good.
