Believe me I am not misinformed. I am speaking of the majority but it doesn't mean that the issues the OP is facing is something that he needs to actually worry about, it is his doc, his DOT doc who both have to make the determination over what is right or wrong in his case.

Thanks for the input this is a great site to get real world input. The reason I am asking is I can take pills and diet and control my diabetes BUT a small amount of insulin is better on your body long term. ALL the pills beat up your liver and kidneys over a period of time. I am going to see a endocrinologist and will make some calls this week, and report back my findings.

At no time did I say that DOT had any input in his treatment, I did (correctly I might add) point out that if he was operating on a US CDL he needed to go through the waiver process if he was using insulin to control his diabetes. Don't try to put words into my mouth.

Ok so this is what I have found out so far:biggrin_25524: If you are on insulin for any reason you are dependant on it, type I or type II doesn't matter. You can't cross border on insulin, both ways and there is an exemption but no one I could contact had any experience and doubted if it would be granted or changed any time soon. This industry is truly ran by stupid people.

I am on meds and a good diet now but I am concerned for the future. BUT I want to say this to all that read this at a later date. Diabetes is a silent killer like many other diseases, most people have it and don't know it. Guys and gals do yourself a favour and buy a tester with strips and check your sugar on your own. Have a meal and check it 2 hours later and it should read 4.5 - 6.5 and then check it first thing in the morning and the readings should be similar. This is for your own good, if it is a little high modify your diet . This is how I found out I had it, I tried a friends tester and saw higher than normal readings and set out after that to get it under control. When I told my doctor he said" how do you know for sure":biggrin_25511: Nobody has to know but you and you can tweek your diet and exercise and maybe live a few more quality years. Thanks for all the info and I hope I gave a little back

You can do it but you must be cleared by doctors both in Canada and the US. it's a long hard process and unless you have a home in both country's hotel bills will eat you up. IMHO it's not worth it.

If you are an American and only drive within the US you are fine. There is a medical form that your doctor has to sign that says your diabetes is under control. However you cannot cross border.

Never heard of this before. I thought as long as you had a medical here in the USA that was all you needed to get into Canada or Mexico.

Can you tell me where you got that information ?

    Thanks

So if ur diabetes is under control can u get a waiver to cross the border into Canada or are u strictly prohibited from driving in Canada at all with this medical condition?

Being under control isn't enough, NOT being dependent on insulin is the key.
