I am very sorry to hear that. I went through the same circumstance when I was growing up.

If you want to be a driver their is still a lot of options for you. What have you decided on doing.

 

For the past three weeks I've been driving a dump truck (both tandem and tri-axle) for a local paving company.

 

If memory serves correctly we were averaging around $1.45-$1.55 for all miles to the truck. That's including deadhead which isn't paid. Also, I was only running about 1800-2200 mpw. Way too much ### time without pay for me.

We all want things today yesterday, etc. however it rarely worksout that way. Since your working and depending on how much you are making take the time to get your credit, cash reserves and your own company together. It won't happen over night but if the american dream for you is driving you can make it work. Time work and money is still what it takes in this world.

One of the most important things/people to find is a tax attorney. These people specialize in the tax code to help you benefit on the front end and the back so you don't get jammed into a corner.
The trucking dealership co.s will be glad to finance you on a truck because sales are down etc. The more you can put down the easier it will be to get one. If you wait as long as you can the more and more importantly the newer you can get you will be better off.

Deciding on doing this as an o/o is a big decission plan,plan,plan, and STICKING TO IT It can be done.

I made it work when I decided to get away from my family all the way around, living near them working with them listening to them. It is difficult and will get harder at times, but don't give up. I wish I had moved on sooner in my life but all has been as it has and my time did come, yours will too. Don't give up................................J

 

I never wanted to be an o/o. I let my step dad talk me into leaving a good job at a good company. I tried to go back to work there, but they're not hiring right now. I'm not a business minded person and never have been. I've got too soft of a heart to be self employed.

 

2.50 to 3.00 in Indiana is what you should be getting right now. Plus .56 FSC.

Orientation went alright today. Learned (read: re-learned) the Smith System and a bunch of other safety stuff. We talked a lot about load securement. Tomorrow is the last day. Gonna go over load securement some more and then get into operations and HR stuff. The truck passed inspection, although they did discover a small hole in the exhaust that can be easily temporarily fixed with a clamp. I can't believe we didn't catch that during the three days we were working on the truck making sure it would pass.

I could be under a load as soon as tomorrow night. Rest assured I'll be on here asking for advice from you flatbedders/covered wagoners. There's so much to know about securement, but they do have a book that has good diagrams and shows how to secure just about every thing they might ever haul . Also, we secured a "trainer" coil loaded in the suicide position today. Tomorrow we'll work on the other positions.

In case some of you don't know, I don't own the truck that's being leased on here. My step-dad, who owns a couple of other businesses that aren't trucking related per se, has bought this truck with me in mind when doing it. I'm hoping for the best here. We both need this to work, and if anyone knows me they know I'm not afraid to work. I learned this from my step-dad. He's been self employed for over 15 years now and knows how to run a successful business. I'm wanting to learn all I can from his business sense and translate that into being a successful O/O myself one day soon.

I think its two days. I had a one day oreintation with an agent out of Iowa.
Great company back in 06' when I was leased to them. still talk to dispatchers, secretary ever so often, and it is slow, along with every one else.
But very easy to work for. go where you want, when you want. you feel like taking a few weeks off, and can afford it, no complaints from them.
