You can also order it with a Detroit pre egr ser60 14L 575hp 1850tq. I have one on order now. You can get it with a 3 year 300,000 mile warranty for an extra $500.00

How much additional was the 14 vs 12.7?
-
I just priced one out this morning.
The 14l 550/1850 is $2500 more then the 12.7 500/1650 option. -
That's a no brainer if you're ordering a powered glider.
-
All depends on what your hauling I guess. Tuff call with price of fuel. I'm sure that 12.7 gonna be better on fuel.
-
Probably slightly better mpg, but resale wise, you'll get the $2500 and then some.
-
This is true forsure. But if your gonna own the truck for 10 years that's a lot of fuel and we all know that's not gonna be getting any cheaper any time ever. If I was a betting man , I think that 12.7 would net you 1/2 mpg better over the big bore engine.
Those 12.7 detroits can be good pullers too if setup right. -
12.7 are way better than 14.0
-
If we're talking about setting them up right, the 14 can be as well. I've owned four 12.7's, and an 11.1. The pre-EGR 14's are tough to find. The 4900 quote I got was for a roller, not a powered, so I wondered what the price difference was. If I was that concerned about fuel mileage I'd just buy a Volvo 730 or Cascadia. Reliability is more important than mpg to my operation.

14L pre egr is a great motor. They were getting ready to release a 600HP 2050TQ but the all egr and government junk came out and killed it. I know of a logging company in Northern Maine the got 3 Western Star trucks that were part of the test back in 1999 and they still have 2 of the 3 trucks (one of them rolled) and they love them. Pre egr 12.7L detroit and no better than the 14L pre egr. Both are great motors.
