Those of you in the field, Am I to believe there is a real Shortage of drivers out there?
I hear talk of rising pay to attract drivers, but cant get my head around why would I drive a truck,
and be away from home for 2-3 weeks for the mileage pay I see advertised.
It doesn't seem that attractive right now.
Do any of you feel the pay per mile will start to go up as the shortage gets worse?
Looking at a second career for myself and it looks interesting, but have lots of questions.
thanks for your responses, Sportz![]()

The news reports are absolutely right. There is a sever shortage of truck drivers. Steering wheel holders are a dime a dozen and as long as they are around to take the cheap paying jobs the pay will stay cheap. I see no end to that particular problem. Then you factor in the foreign imported labor, the industry is doomed.

My definition of driver shortage would be,shipper calling numerous companies to get freight picked up and not getting anyone to pick up their freight.I don't see this happening. Therefore no driver shortage.

The only shortage is top-notch quality drivers... These so-called trucking companies as I like to call them run off all The top drivers due to their lies and deceitful promises... So if there is a so-called driver shortage these want to be trucking companies are the direct cause of it

Supply and demand is a wonderful thing. Too bad many of these trucking companies are economic illiterates. But then again, maybe they are just cheap #####. If there is a driver shortage the reason is simple. People in general do not want to work for the wages that these companies offer. More demand and less supply mean prices/cost of labor need to go up to attract more supply. However, the way they are going about it is heading to Washington DC complaining that they need a bigger supply of low wage people to fill the void and drive down demand. And in the process maybe even drive wages down lower if they get enough of these illegals in. And in the process your so called representives in washington will prevent a huge price increase in stores around the country to make up for this all. Hence all of the amnesty talk that's going on. Big business wants cheap labor, government types don't want non truckers to get nailed at the grocery stores.

I don't see Fedex and ABF LTL running around saying there's a drivers shortage, posting ADs on billboards and at truck stops.
Swift keeps on saying it.. and other companies that pay their drivers garbage. Gezz I wonder whyKD5AXG, hal380, Toomanybikes and 2 others Thank this. -
With the national unemployment rate this high, there is a seemingly unlimited supply of short term steering wheel holders. Most new hires are simply out of options."semi" retired, sportzfann, SheepDog and 2 others Thank this.
