Let's see............ When a highway gets shut down. It will tell me hey follow this route to get around, alerts me of upcoming construction, accidents, delays and will ask if I want to reroute or sit in traffic. Gives rough eta and mileage to plan my trip

like i mentioned above the darn thing WORKS. been using it 3 1/2 years. won't use anything else. -
I use my old Ran Mcnally then customer directions from there to cross check the route from my PC Miler. One of the issues alot of drivers have can be fixed by simply resetting the parameters it uses(height, weight, length as well as roads to avoid or prefer).
snowwy and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
I only use gps when I'm close to an address and don't wanna miss the turn but to plan a route should be done the ole fashion way, with maps or atlas.Too many truckers solely depend on GPS and don't read signs like they should.More drivers have hit low bridges or enters a no trk route because their GPS gave them that route.AT least compare a GPS route with a truckers atlas.

I had a Garmin trucker GPS, now I have a cheaper Nuvi. I consider it ONE tool in the navigation toolbox. For it's low cost and convenience, why not have it? The day a driver totally relies on it is the day they need to get off the truck, because it will screw you , even the trucker units.

guess i'll be leaving my truck now. TOTALLY.

Well I'm ole school know how to route plan use a map and figure my milage with a string. with that being said, my daughter bought me a GPS for Christmas. Its a Rand McNally I find it useful for something and worthless for most. I like the way it tracks your daily miles and hours and speed. But other than that I travel the skinny roads and am routed by the state, so its almost useless for that

[h=2]Drivers, why are we using GPS units?[/h]
the answer may equate the same reason that male truck drivers roll a suitcase on wheels to and from "his",term loosely used, truck for a shower.
I can't answer your question simply because i do not even own a gps.well there is one in my phone but it has never been utilized.2012 rand mcnalley paper trucker atlas,cb,and a cell phone will get you anywhere you really need to go.period.and you can keep your gps and quallcom.period.
okay that was derived from another topic but seemed to fit here as well. hope that you read the answer that blows your skirt up if you are a female driver because the new breed is totallyyy dependent upon electronic gadgetry and will not be able to give you an adequate answer(their trainer told them to use a gps perhaps?) while the old farts like myself can't either due to not using one. -

I have company GPS...reason its wrong op compared to customers is it takes u shortest route may not be best or legal. I like the GPS for distance an eta and telling me when to turn for street I need.
I use atlas and always call the customer for directions. Check routing company gives and let the GPS catch up. Anyone who blindly follows a GPS without looking at the atlas is not using logic. I was going to insert a name but didn't want the mods to start blocking posts.x#1 Thanks this.
