Had this same situation since I was a stay-home parent for eight years prior.
My company gave me a form that is an affidavit of unemployment/self-employment.
On it, I wrote/stated that I had been a stay home parent for the period specified, signed it and dated it.
Below that were spaces for two references who could vouch for that status.

I also had to provide the last three years of W-2 forms from the primary income earner in the household.
These things covered all the bases for hiring and I was told that this documentation is a Federal requirement, I guess so as to make sure I'm not another version of Walter White. Whatever.

In your case, I would think that the proof of SSI income would meet the letter of the law for documenting your income.

    Have all paperwork notorized.

Don't say you were paid as a caregiver for your own child unless you can back it up with W-2 form.

If a company started asking for pay stubs that would let me know their not the kind of company I want to work for.

pretty good advice in this thread. here's the regulations for employment history. and what is required. all new driver candidates must show 3 years prior work history if the have never operated a commercial motor vehicle in the past. only aplicants that have drove a commercial motor vehicle in the past. must give an additional 7 years work history for all employers who they have operated a commercial motor vehicle for.prospective employers looking to hire a driver only have to check the previous 3 years of work history. and that is all 80% of trucking companies do check on drivers.

so what does this mean for new people entering the trucking industry? you only need to show 3 years work history. that's it. that's all a trucking company will check.

how to help you get to where you want to be. I would talk to recruiters about what you may need to get qualified to drive a truck with that company. if they don't know. which they may not. then ask them to connect you with the head of safety if possible. that person will know what to do. I would get all the paper work in order you have according to the dates. start with today's date. or the latest date on the paper work you have. get the in the right order. then I would get a few letters of recommendations for the doctors you were visiting. your friends and family won't cut it. the d.o.t or the fmcsa won't accept letters of recommendations from family, friends, co-workers, bosses, etc. they might accept the letter from a doctor due to the medical degree and years of being a doctor.

my advice: I would goto a friend or family member that has a registered business for the last 5 to 10 years. and use them. the trucking company is only going to call them to get a fax number to send over the work history verification form. once the form is filled out. they fax it back to the trucking company. and your covered. having someone with a registered business. is just a benefit to cover your butt and the trucking companies butt. so I would do one job for the last 3 years. which will look a lot better the 3 jobs in the last 3 years. recruiters or the staff of a trucking company will not and can not tell you this.

so to cover the abc of it.

    a. make sure they are registered business with the state.
    b. make sure they have been in business for atleast 5 years.
    c. make sure that you can trust them to get the form back in a fast timely manner.

to the op. if you would like to see a copy of what the employment verification form looks like. send me a p.m. with your e-mail. I have no problems with sending you a copy.

Well, if you drove for the same company for 50 years...I don't imagine you ever had to fill out an application then. Because in the "Work History" portion of the application (hard copy and on-line), it specifies due to 'what ever code' perspective driver must list 3 years past employment, and 7 years prior to that (10 total) if driving was involved.
Trust me...I have filled out PLEANTY of app's, and it was on all of them.
