Hello everbody, I am new here, new to hauling freight, but not to trucking. I got a couple questions about heat. First one is how long should a truck idle when first starting before getting under load? Second what about idle before shutdown, and is it ok to shut the motor down for fuel without a cool down, third is how full should you fill the fuel tanks when cold, when hot, etc... My trainer says an hour warm up, and sometimes he shuts her down right off the road at a fueling station, and when fueling he fills up tanks to the brim. My thinking goes something like this, start a truck, let her warm at least ten minutes and take it easy for five more. Idle a truck for at least five before shutdown (elsewise hotspots can form and weaken metal). And leave a little room in a fuel tank for expansion. In a 150 gallon tank there has to be a good bit of expansion, and over time the pressure from that fuel could cause problems. Now I know that technology has advanced, and trucks are built to run for a million miles or more, but I like to err on the side of caution. All that aside, I am glad I found this site and this forum, hopefully I can learn a few things here.

    Ukumfe Thanks this.

Because I start my truck after I check the engine's fluids, but before I complete my morning inspection, it'll be about 10 minutes of idle before I roll.

As for the cool down, my company says that the time from coasting down the off-ramp and driving to the fuel island is enough time for the turbo to cool down. With that in mind, if I pull into a rest area, I'll idle maybe 5 minutes.

My rule of thumb is to let the needle move on the oil temp gauge before I roll.
