Mine is a '13
Top lever right side of the column above the wiper lever.
4 positions. All the way up is off. Pull towards you one click that's the cruise brake. You set it with the button on the end of the lever to automatically engage at a preset speed while the cruise is on. The speed setting will show in the dash display when activated in cruise brake mode. This mode will also engage the jake when you step on the brake pedal when the cruise is disengaged.
Pull the lever toward you again for stage 1,2,3 ect.
It it isn't very strong but useful in some circumstances -
hum it may not work then. Does it only work while on cruise? I had the lever all the way down switched the one on top couple of times nothing. I thought may have a button on steering wheel to actavate it.

No only position one is the cruise brake. Position 2,3,4 is normal mode and will engage any time you let off the fuel.
If you pull it into anything other than position 1 and let off the fuel and you don't get the jake then it isn't working.Truckingbiker Thanks this. -
Well #### looks like I dont have a jake brake.

Just a thought and I may be completely wrong because I've never had the problem or even looked to see which fuses are in the box but the main fuse box is on top of the dash there are 2 screws that hold the cover on it. Might look in the box and read the back panel and see if there's a fuse associated with it could be blown. Everything in these volvos is electrical/electronic. Couldn't hurt just to check I'm at home for the holiday or I'd take a peek at mine for you. They're bad about blowing the fuse for the trailer markers if you change trailers and unplug/plug the pigtail in while the lights are on too. Had both a '12 and now the '13 have done it. I always turn the lights off when changing trailers and never have had it happen again. The marker fuse is under the hood in the box on the firewall btw in case you ever have that happen.

Engine brake is the little lever mounted next to the wipers. Six position, with a rocker switch on the end to turn it off and on.
Bottom row of the dash display, you should see something like this:
_________________
[ON][6] 123456.7mi
[ON] means the engine brake switch is on. [6] means it's in position 6 (max brake). It only works if both the clutch and throttle pedals are *not* depressed. (Feet off the pedals!)
I had problems with mine, and it turned out that the clutch switch was going bad. In that case, cruise would randomly stop working, as well.
If yours isn't working, I'd take the truck in to the company shop, pronto.Truckingbiker Thanks this. -
Is yours a '13 model? Newer maybe?
Just interested as it sounds like there may be different versions of the same controller.
I ran ran both a very basic bare bones '12 model 630 and now a much better and well equipped '13 model 670 and the dash layout and controls on both are identical. On both models I drove simply pulling the lever into position turned it on. No display on the dash to indicate it was on or off or what stage. The rocker switch on the end only set the speed level for the cruise brake.
Always good to know if there are different versions in case I ever get in one my company runs a lot of volvos lol -
No button on the wheel. I noticed that it doesn't seem the jake is very strong on the Volvos I've driven. Maybe because it's so quiet
However, downhill on I88 W hills with 45K onboard and jake all the way down works pretty well for me. I'm using little service brake
If you're not sure, have it checked out. Yesterday I had a "VEC error" "Maintence Required" message. Don't think you have the VEC, but I stopped and shut it down for 5 mins. and it must have reset. OK after that.
Good advice from flyingmusicianflyingmusician Thanks this. -
The jake in the volvos we run are far better than the jake in my Pete. Going west down Donner the Volvo will hold me in 10th gear fully loaded at 55mph. In my Pete I have to use 9th gear and tap the brake every so often to maintain 55.
