So they can haul roughly 10% more payload.
This would ok for a regional driver that is home for 2 or 3 nights per week, but not for OTR. The tiny bunk combined with having only one fuel tank would make for a miserable experience if you had to live in one for weeks at a time like Prime expects their drivers to do. I know the old timers had it worse in the old cabovers, but this 2014 and I would expect better. -
To answer the OP question. If you are going solo as company reefer, you have to get a lightweight truck. They'll make this pretty clear during the upgrade process.
Personally, lightweights were my biggest gripe about Prime. All in all, for a starter company they aren't the worse out there, but to be placed in such a small truck for a month at a time was pretty ridiculous in my book. Storage gets even worse if/when you get an APU, as it'll take up almost half the room under the bunk too. I think for Dedicated runs they aren't a bad thing at all, but for OTR is just silly.irishramblernv Thanks this. -
As far as I know you don't have to take a lightweight truck, it's an opinion and if you do take it you earn extra .05CPM.
Personally I think the more opinions we all have the betterLast edited: Aug 31, 2014
irishramblernv Thanks this. -
Thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate all the info you all have given me.
Figgy and freightwipper Thank this. -
higher top speed, more space, normal size fuel tanks and more conformable vs earning an extra .05CPM for sacrificing those things.
It's a tough choice, even if I were to make it.
If it were me and I had to make the choice it would come down to how long I would stay out.
If I was home weekly I wouldn't need much in my truck and I'd prefer the extra cash.
OTR 3+ weeks at a time, it would suck cause I'd need more space for more clothes, food, shower supplies, water etc etc for being out longer so probably not.
Is it manageable? sure but doing OTR in a day cab is manageable also, the seat could be your bed lol.
The real question is.. is the money difference worth the sacrifice to you?The Challenger and irishramblernv Thank this. -
About 10,000 lbs lighter then a full size condo.

I'll post pictures of how I have mine setup in a bit, but I have 2 100 gallon tanks in mine, there is plenty of room in it and I stay out 7-8 weeks at a time.
I had the passenger seat removed so I can have a real fridge instead of a small cooler. I built my own shelves and more space then I know what to do in it. I even have the chains under my bunk and still have plenty of storage space.
Like I said, I'll post pictures in a few, just need to make my bed and clean up the dirty clothes. -
Wow hostile are we? This would be from actual experience and scale tickets.
Glad you can be the defender of what is true. Now go troll someplace else!
