Our instructor told us today that the learning curve would not be a full year. He also said that he wishes someone would have told him to apply first with specialized hauling such as tankers from the start. He said the pay scale would be more fair than starting out with a dry van / trailer.
Thoughts?

Based on what I have read here repeatedly, he is correct, and is the reason I am going to go straight into tankers from school. Well, that is my plan anyhow.hal380 Thanks this.

Tankers or flatbed pay more than dry van. Take your pick. Get ALL your endorsements when you get your CDL.
hal380 and Criminey Jade Thank this. -
Your instructor is right. Assessorial pays make the big difference, plus less waiting time at shippers / receivers. Average 1 hour load/ 1 hour unload.

From my experience tankers pay a lot better than vans. Less sitting around and more respect from shippers and receivers.

Tankers do pay better. When you do have to sit around at a shipper/consignee, after 2 free hours, tanker drivers get paid demurrage charges until they are done and out of there. How much depends on the company. I'm with Dana/Suttles and we get $30. an hr for a company driver. Plus other accessorials like using the truck pump or air, or extra hose etc.

Chinatown,
Will tanker companies take recent graduates? If so, who in the Virginia area? -
If the tankers are hauling hazmat I'd say wait a year. It would be for your own good. There's just too many regs to know.
