I'm pretty sure it works this way.

The hire date is the date this new company hires you, not when the temp. agency sent you there.
Your union time picks up where it left off when you withdrew.
Your seniority begins over on the date the new company hired you from the temp. agency.

 

OK ... I get why it is confusing but from how I understand it works, if you were in the union, you worked non-union jobs, that does not count toward your seniority. So ... If you work for a company as a temp (really a contractor) and then get hired in, the time you spent at the company as a non-employee doesn't count as time at the company - you are not working for the company as an employee covered under a union agreement.

 

It depends upon the company and their union contract. The first union company I worked for back in the 90's, I started through a temp agency and my hire date was the date I started as a temp.

 

DOLLARS TO DONUTS:
1) Your date of hire with the company that you are currently work for is the one that you most likely would be using for seniority purposes.
2) Your date of hire with the temp agency most likely would NOT count only because the temp agency is considered another company, an independent contractor that you were previously employed by.
3) Your union membership status in any previous company most likely is of NO concern of the current company that you are currently working for.

This is why I avoid working for a union...

Seniority starts when you're hired for that company and you back on track with your retirement package at the union hall
