my animal loving, like me,neighbors feed my dogs and keep an eye out for me but then, lately anyway,i have been home nightly.that is soon to change and i shall depend upon them again. i usually buy them a gift card from various stores from time to time and THANK them in person for being good neighbors. Tractor Supply gift cards are loved as they have several pets, like me,that they have adopted into their family.

I reciprocate and take care of things for them when I can.It all seems to work out. There is only me and them that live here on weiss lake and this dead end road full time, quite rural,so we watch out for each other regardless.

you can make things work out but why be gone for so long? a week is too much actually.6 weeks would have me,if a noob, seeking another form of employment.

best of luck.reads as if you are truly thinking this through.

We are talking about it ALOT. I'm not going into trucking "to see the world" it's that I'm UTTERLY unfit for nursing or anything else medical :-/ We also live out in the country, so my first concern was "lonesome kid" which is why I want the freind staying with. Boys will be boys and all that, but I'd have alot more peace of mind that with the 2 lookin out for each other (other boy has called me "mom" for years)

Give them a card for gasoline, a card for groceries enuff to last them 4 weeks -- never mind a month of cat-food :) if I return to find live critters, the house "reasonable" and the grass cut maybe a bit of cash, even!

We don't have family, but some solid adult freinds. Fact I considered having him start calling uncle M or S alot more often so he's in the habit.

Ideally, I'd like to have another adult house-mate but grown-ups are hard to find...

    THANKS

Well... I don't *WANT* to be out 6 weeks, might be unhappy at 2 or 3. But, I'm trying to be REALISTIC. I'll be a noob with a trainer which means "at the mercy of the company" at least until that's over with. Might be required to run team for a period after that. Depends on company. Pretty much figured the first 6 months are gonna be something between Purgatory & Detroit :)

Wish I had neighbors like yours. I used to, and enjoyed being a good neighbor as well :-( but sadly this little area isn't very kindly.

    God Bless

I have no family or friends nearby, most of my friends are drivers. I live in the country in a small neighborhood of 40 homes all spaced out mostly on 1 acre+ lots. To give my home the "lived in" look, I had my mail delivered to a PO box, I bought 2 light timers so my inside lights would go on at random times. I have landscapers mow the lawn every two weeks. I also left the radio on loud enough to be heard just outside my home. Later I bought two water sprinklers and also so had them on timers. Motion detector outside lights also work very well. 20 yrs otr staying out for 2-6 weeks never had a problem.

why don't you route yourself by the house once a week. You can do your 10 hr break, cut the grass and keep going.

If your within maybe an hours drive of a college you can advertise for a female or a software engineer (GEEK) to stay there for free. I did that for 3 years and had a young lady is school getting her medical degree in veterinary surgery. She had her own bedroom and stayed even when I was home for a week. Her mother and father came to meet me first and had my local police friend also show up to vouch for me.

yeah I had no family close by either. a few things to think about.

I bought lots of dog food for him and dog still missed a meal now and then. there were nights when he would spend a night at friends and dog was alone. dog has a pet door to get outside in his kennel so no worries about son always being there to let the dog out.

I bought lots of non perishable food for him, as grocery money was wasted quickly on junk food. whenever I came home to visit I would fill the freezer with meats.

    gas card is good idea.

one other thing that helped is being in the country everyone knows everyone. the neighbor down the road was very good about driving by. just enough to wave hi to my son and let him know that should anything too rowdy happen, a call would be made. LOL they helped him now and than when he needed as well.

yeah my grass was cut sort of. we usually mow 3 acres, he managed about 1/2 acre. enough to keep around the house looking decent. worst part was when he thought he had to "fix" the rider. that didn't go well. I had to talk him through putting it back together on the ph. LOL

Sounds like our kids are related. Especially the mowing :) Havin the best freind there should do much for nights at home. More worried about the car breaking or some other thing. I've lived here 10 years, we don't know any neighbors. It's kinda like, they all have $200K houses and we have the only rental house around here. I *DO* plan on being sure Landlord is up to date, he drives by here all the time anyways going to work.

How long were you away at a time?
    Thanks

I had accepted a contract position so all in all was gone 1 1/2 years. during that time I flew home a couple times to check up, and flew him down to FL a couple times to hang out.

I would worry about landlord, although you said you have been there 10 years. hopefully he is ok with the plan? Landlords tend to get all "your kid did that" when you're away.

It may actually be easier for your son being in a rental. mine was in a very old farmhouse surrounded by corn fields all alone. LOL when things broke he had to handle it or call and I would get it taken care of. I did make him pay the elec bill, the propane and his own phone service. elec bill increased quite a bit. computers and lights 24 hours a day I think. LOL paying for the propane kept him from having a sauna in there.

having to pay bills meant he had to keep working, that kept him from partying too much.
